so didn't do much to the old fj80 this weekend. I drove it a couple hours north of me for a doctors appointment. On the way back it thew a check engine code. since its running just fine I am guessing either I have an egr issue or a vacuum leak some place. I replaced a few vacuum lines and reset the computer by unhooking the battery. 3 days later its not showing the check engine light. I did change the air filter with a k&N one. found an interesting dirt and dust collection trap under the air box I never noticed before. It was full of dirt. poured that out too. Everybody else know that dirt trap was there? I sure did not.
The "tuna can"!

Yep. That trap is known here as the "tuna can"

On the air filter, don't use K-N. They have larger open area and allow more dirt and debris in. They do not increase HP or mpg, despite what their marketing states.

Get a quality air filter from Toyota. The slightly cheaper part number ends in 66030 and the washable version ends in 61030. Both will fit your 80 despite what a dealership may tell you.

I work in filtration for a living, so I fully understand how K-N makes their filters.

My kids painted an ocean scene on it. Not the tuna can theme I had in mind, but they enjoyed it.

How much cutting have you had to do to get those to stuff?

So like I said trying some new shoes. So far none, there no way I could go wheeling right now. As mush as I like the new tires unless I can get them to flex the way I want the old tires will go back on.I'm hanging on to the old set incase these don't work out or if I want to go wheeling. The old 37s on stock wheels will actually stuff. At the cost of frame and inside wheel well rub. The new wheels 3.5 back space or 1" further from the frame with a 9" wide wheel so the tire are sticking out two more inches on each side.
I will start a thread in the tech section fitting 39s with a minimal left.

Changed the oil. Poor girl hasn’t been driven much this last year. Only 1372 miles since last august :( but the oil was well over a year old and needed to be changed. Hopefully 2020 allows for some more trips in the 80!

Moping a bit because I missed out on several rides this weekend, but got out this morning for a first stretch since picking it up and getting caught up on maintenance.

Got to use the winch too when I slipped into a deep hole on the passenger side and hung on the slider (pics never do justice).

I also quit my pity party for missing the rides since I am not facing what one of our local club members is facing. Here in the 80 section he had the 400hp build thread (Mud member aquatech3). Thought I would share the link to his GoFundMe if anyone is interested.
New 80?

No pictures but I learned a lesson. Found out you MUST torque your brake caliper bolts to factory specs. Or else the caliper will ride on the inside of the wheel and scratch the crap out of it. Good news. No real damage and bolts are all tight now. And new bolts were pretty cheap.
You got off easy. Sounds like the top caliper bolt came loose so there wasn't any resistance on the wheel, just scraping. Had the bottom one come loose it could have jammed against the wheel and locked it up. I've seen that happen to a few. It's called making a quick exit from the roadway. LOL

It was actually the lower bolt that had removed itself. I feel pretty lucky. But also feel quite dumb for not making sure it was torqued correctly to begin with. Live and ya learn.
