What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (56 Viewers)

I platidipped my mirrors orange because I liked how the orange looked on wildyoats 80. Problem was his cruiser is black and mine is white. The first thing my sister said when she saw them was it looks like a Tennessee vols cruiser. I’m glad the platidip was easy to remove. No pics 😔

To my own amazement I actually took the old girl to some legit off-roading in the Sierras. Checked out a lake, crawled over some legit obstacles and even found some snow at 9000ft to have lunch on.

My coworker who has a really nicely built Jeep(Dana 60 with 38s) was very impressed with the 80, kept up with no issues except for one section where 37 would been helpful. I didn’t want to drag my diff over multiple rocks.

The cruiser continues to treat me with disrespect; I swapped out a worn oem steering damper for a tough dog unit I got from another Mud member. It took me an embarrassing amount of time considering the number of nuts/bolts involved
Also, I tried to get my winch mounted so I could get the cable spooled back on. ( I didn't quite get there). Every task with this truck has involved needing another tool, not being able to find any one of a tool I know I own multiples of, or needing to go out and source new hardware.
I did manage to get everything secured and put away before this rare (for Seattle) thunderstorm opened up though. Small win for me.
@RFB I'm sending you a pm regarding your camera news.

Been running around in the woods. 18.5 mpg was the best I've got, 224 was the hottest it got over the Teton pass with the 10% grade...and on the way down had to stop because the brakes were fading to completely ineffective. Been running absolutely awesome!!
BTW...we need a big brake kit for these 80s!!!

Many people on mud (me included) have gone to slotted/drilled rotors. The slots can improve brake output by removing gas and dust that is trapped between the pad and rotor. The drill holes will give you better braking power. See link for summary:

I have slot rotors and I don't think it makes any difference. I can tell the difference between different pads, my old Hawk LTS pads loved being hot, I can tell braking is better when it's hot. However, those pads don't like cold much so might try the green pads next time.

Finally got round to completely rewiring my Witts End rear quarter panel. I was forced into this following my discovery that my morningstar solar controller couldn't run my fridge and charge the battery - even in strong Florida sunshine. Replaced it with a Epever MPPT model. Massive improvement. New setup will fully charge the batteries from overnight discharge and keep the fridge running
before midday.

Also replaced the front panhard bar bushings which was surprisingly easy..

IF you havent already installed this setup(which looks great) consider upping that invertor now to a better brand, you dont want issues with that thing especially tucked all the way down inside QP, ask me how I know.

I felt the same way when I starting working on my beast. Now that I have all my tools and I make sure I have at least one full front end rebuild kit on hand at all times. . . . it aint so bad. An especially good thing that was never the case before: My wife is always pushing to buy more tools. Last week she said I should buy an alignment machine. I was like what!?

I do.. turned off OD and let the engine help me out but still that 10% grade is a killer. It's all good.

Yup you gotta use 2nd gear. Should hold a constant speed at 10% with basically no braking. Ideally shift into 2nd at 30-35 but you can drop down without a huge lurch above that speed if needed. Better than brakes failing.

Where are you getting toyota parts now?

Where are you getting toyota parts now?

I have started using McGeorge Toyota. Someone on here recommended them. Quick delivery and a healthy discount off normal prices.
