The shop Cruiser kills it again.
Cheers
Not beyond what I noted. The battery cable presented itself earlier, though. Twice in Canada on the way up, the truck wouldn't start after stopping for gas. I would wait a few minutes and then it would start. I thought my starter was going bad. But since tightening the cable I have had no problems starting.
Here's an album of some I took. They aren't really in any order.
This weekend I finished up a 2 month 10,000 mile trip from Colorado to Alaska and back.
Rough summary: On the way up, went through Wyomining, Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Stopped for a few days to finish the northern 110 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail so I've now done the whole thing. Continued through BC eventually north on the Cassiar Highway then Alaska Highway to Anchorage. Did a lot of trail running in the connected road system and spent time in Cordova (without the Cruiser). Picked up my girlfriend before heading north to Fairbanks and then the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay. Got snow in mid august in the Brooks Range. Swam in the Arctic Ocean. Drove back through Dawson City, then the Cassiar Highway again to Washington. More PCT stuff. Back through a different Washington/Idaho route to Wyoming for a Wind River backpacking trip. Then back home very late yesterday and back at work today!
The Cruiser did well. Some notes:
It was a hell of a trip.
- Got an oil change and tire rotation in Anchorage half way through. Driving back, there was basically no oil consumption until the last 1k or so driving back into the lower 48 (where it was generally a lot hotter driving conditions). Now the dip stick is half-way between L and F with almost exactly 5k miles on the oil and 213k on the engine. Pretty impressive I think.
- Haven't run all the MPG numbers, but seems to be right on 13 average. Best and worst MPG were on the same section of I-80 in Wyoming. On the way up I had a horrible headwind. Literally fighting to maintain 50-55mph on the interstate and I had to stop early to get more gas. On the way back in the opposite direction I drafted a semi from a safe distance with a minor tailwind. And besides crossing eastern Washington on the way back, this was the only interstate I took.
- Some sections gas was really expensive and man it was painful on my wallet. Lots of $4/gallon+ in northern Canda. $5/gallon+ on the Dalton Highway.
- The Dalton Highway was a little rough. I broke 2 exhaust hangers (or maybe 1 was already broken but not noticed) so my exhaust tail end is held with some scavenged wire. It also seemed to have killed my 9011 low beam bulbs. Both burned out north of Fairbanks with about 15k miles on them. I had my old stock bulbs so I put those back in. But driving at night sucked after that. Also the road rattled one of my battery terminals just loose enough that the truck wouldn't start/no sign of life at the highest/most remote part of the road on Atigun Pass. This was quite alarming until I tightened the terminal!

Got dusty hitting 307k miles in SE Oregon. Hit the Steens Mountain Loop camped one night at 7k feet elevation then camped on the Alvord Desert. Can you spot the LC in the bottom pic?

Ill be needing one of those when i replace my abs and on the wifes car when it needs brakes.I finally finished up my 1.5 weeks long ABS/LSPV delete. Along with deleting the ABS and LSPV I installed a new booster and master cylinder too.
So this morning before it got too hot here in AZ I went and bled the brakes on my Land Cruiser. I used the Mityvac MV8000 Vacuum/Bleeder from Harbor Freight. The bleeder made things so much easier than the two men method. The only thing that I had to do was make sure I stopped every so often to ensure I was not emptying out the reservoir. For peace of mind, I bleed the system a full 3 times to ensure that I was getting clean new fluid out of the bleeder screws.
The with the newish booster/master and deleting the LSPV and ABS pump the brakes are so much better now. Here in a few months, I will be replacing the axle to caliper lines with stainless steel lines. I have the frame to axle lines in now and I am sure that has helped the feeling in the pedal.
The Mityvac was a great purchase, it cost me $45 and came with a few attachments for bleeding and testing different vacuum parts on cars. It also came with some great reviews versus the 2 others available at Harbor Freight. One of the reviews I watched the gentleman mentioned that he had his for nearly 10 years.
Utah and Colorado over the last six days. It was all simply awesome. Spent it with my father and my son.
Awesome! Is that rimrocker trail to the UT-CO state line? Def not Kokopelli...
Yes sir, Rimrocker it is.
Seriously what kind of camera is that amazing pictureStarted on the journey to replace the oil pump seal (rounded one screw head, grrr), replace the harmonic balancer crank bolt seal (thank you 3/4" breaker bar and starter motor), replace the radiator, and remove the lateral arms using my 3ton floor jack and 1/2" breaker bar for muscle on the 24mm bolts.

Alvord is really incredible, I got to see it for the first time when its known by locals as "the playa". I went to the lake bed last spring when driving across it meant getting stuck in a few inches of mud for sure, I drove a little on the fringe of the water where it wasnt too deep and like driving on ice, donuts and drifting was a lot of fun untill it came to cleaning all the mud off.... never again... to this day I think there is still sediment coming out from the crevasis' of the body, hot spring employees were surprised i didnt get stuck, I got lucky I guessI was blown away when we were at Alvord. Had just had a bunch of rain and the lake bed (while still rock solid) had an inch of water sitting on top of it. It was pretty surreal to drive across it. Like driving on top of water.
We didn't make the whole Steens loop. It was whiteout conditions and 4-6 inches of snow already near the top (early October last year). Some of the group members weren't comfortable with it so we turned around near the top. Hoping to get back at some point!
