What did you do to your pig today? (3 Viewers)

Worked on Pig #1 this weekend.

Replaced the transmission pan gasket that was leaking and figured out the shifting configuration of the NP203/205 transfer case. The PO had it labeled but it was wrong. Good to get that figured out.

Now all I have to do is replace the seals in the front axle to get it ready to test on the trails. Then I can proceed to other upgrades as planned.

Pig #1 is known at our house as The Beast. It has been in hibernation for quite some time but I think we are finally ready to put it to use.

Damn, I'm getting a little queasy just looking at that last picture.

edit: (guess I should have said Dang)

you weren't the one in the passenger seat...i can panic and scream like a girl sometimes ;)

. the ledge was waaaaayyyyyy tooooo close for comfort and it was a bit hair raising at times...

Pighead did wear his "Pucker Face" for a bit there...

wheeled spring creek and had to drag a dead jeep through. had to go up to get to an area where we could get it turned around to go down. this involved a narrow steep climb up a wet trail of loose rock. the ledge was waaaaayyyyyy tooooo close for comfort and it was a bit hair raising at times...

Wow. Narrow, tilted down hill and slippery. Is that your tire track in photo #3?

yup....trail wasn't very wide to begin with and we had already squeezed by when it was determined that pighead would have to back down to pull the dead jeep. no issues there outside of pucker factor, but with the dead jeep behind us, a decent uphill grade, and loose wet rock and dirt, it just kept pulling the pig closer to the edge. glad pighead didn't know just how f'n close he was until after we'd gotten home...he would not have been happy.

and yes, it's a llllloooooonnnnnngggggggg way down:eek:

we did get him up the trail to a spot where we could get everyone turned around, and the jeep driver didn't want to be towed back to the all4fun campground (think cruise moab for jeeps) behind a yota, so while the fj40 headed down the hill to stop traffic, we got him hooked up behind the bronco and we were behind in case we needed to keep his ass end in check.

Sorry Baby, Pighead DID know how friggin' close he was to that dropoff...you can't wheel the same Pig for 25 years and not know where the tires is. I did not care for it, not one bit. But it was a job that needed doing and I was the one in front.
Post interrupted by a call to get dinner ready..more later.

Did the garden-hose engine flush. Nasty looking radiator fluid...ran it about 15 minutes. When the water came out hot and clear I figgered the thermostat was open and I was done. Pulled the radiator and laid it down with the inlet/outlets up, poured in a gallon of hardware store Muriatic acid, which almost fills a radiator, and am letting it sit now.

Pulled off the old wide/skinny crank pulley, time to swap on my double-wide.
Thinking about changing the front crank seal...might have an oil leak there.

I thought he was going to take pictures and narrate like when you helped him swap gas tanks in the Pig? :-)

After a break for wiring, I actually made some progress... I got tired of soldering and saying unkind things about the PO and his mastery of electronics, so I put Piggers to the side and decided to dig my '67 Ducati out from the bowels of the garage.

I bought the bike about 5 years ago for 300 bucks due to rust and a totally seized engine. After bathing the engine in auto transmission fluid, diesel, and finally acid, tah-dah! Still frozen. Poop. So I took some advice from a car friend, picked up a can of PB blaster, and soaked it. It turns over smooth as butter :D after a week it's starting to look like a badass track bike.

Back to Piggers... Ended up needing 2 different wording diagrams to work out the circuits, but today I managed to finish cleaning up the clusterf@ck of wiring. I'm one headlight switch short of a fully functioning harness, yay! Next up, hunt down a bell housing to mate-up my '85 om617 to a 5 speed...

Yesterday was cleaning and painting. Today I picked up a power steering pump, cooler, and ford Taurus fuse bock from the salvage yard. More prep for the big pull down.

Got the double-wide crank pulley and FIPG'd timing gear cover in place, found a fan belt that would turn the power steering pump, Put the radiator back in and filled it with water. Watched water pour out of the radiator core. Think maybe I left the muriatic acid in it for too long...
Swapped in a spare radiator from one of the spare Pigs. Seems to be holding water again.

Tuff break on the radiator. I usually dilute the pool juice 50% and rock it back and forth to agitate it some. I dump and flush when I see it getting good color, then do the whole cycle again. Usually don't see any color gain on the second pass. Usually I don't leave it in for more than 5-10 minutes. John
