Thank you Sir- if and when I do the front, it will be a Harrop Elocker. Our local Toyota guru (ACC) spoke very highly of Harrop E lockers and also confirmed from all of their installs- no issues to date. Harrop was his only recommendation. Wished I had consulted them ahead of my impulse to snatch what I thought was a good deal on the TJM product.

Nothing against TJM- they have been responsive and supporting through the process and locker it self is a stout piece of iron, but I do like the design simplicity of the E-locker and no air requirement.

Thanks for posting in the thread.
Yep, Brian and ACC are a great resource for the Cruiser community. They led the way, installing Harrops long before we formed Cruiser Brothers - proud to have them as partners and friends.

Here's what led to my problem. Broken teeth on the crown gear.

Hard to say what caused this and if it could have happened either way whether I installed the locker or not. Really hard to tell. There were no cracks spotted whilst the locker was previously being installed. The shop didn't take any responsibility and it's almost impossible to pin anything on them. That said, John charged me everything (parts) at his cost and only included 4.5 hrs of labor even though they spent a considerable amount of time working on the rig. 3 weeks later and I finally get my rig back. RELIEF!!!!!!!!! Felt great driving it back home. Order restored.

The locker was intact and still functions well.

It really looks like the shop didn't get the gear set up well enough. You can clearly see that the mesh was riding on the outside edge of the ring gear teeth. Even the depth looks a bit shallow.

I concur, looks like they did not space/shim the gearing right. The breaking should be dead center of the teeth not the end of it.

I noticed that and same thought came to mind -potential set up fail. The paint shows wear, where the pinion was riding- more towards the top of the ring gear if that makes sense. There is a pretty good section in the FSM that illustrates what good or bad mesh looks like and how to correct if you care to study the cause further.

It could have been weakened from a previous event as well- which makes it hard to point the finger at a single conclusion.

Anyway good to know your back rolling again. Thanks for the update.

After a minor issue with my actuator (that was promptly remedied and supported by TJM USA) the locker works very well. Lock up is instantaneous (as long as you've got air pressure)

FWIW To mitigate install woes:
1.) Find a competent installer who understands how to setup a Toyota 3rd (and does it often)-I can't emphasize this enough
2.) Pre-Inspect the actuator to ensure the circlips are fully seated and locked into in their grooves.
3.) Fully test the locker for function and leak down on the bench with regulated air (@ 80-90psi) prior to re-installing in the axle housing.
4.) Use high quality (NON LS) 85/140 full synthetic gear lube: Royal Purple, Amsoil, Valvoline
5.) Provide the 19 BPT Tap and a fresh cobalt drill bit to your installer- it will save some time for them.

I apologize for putting my part for sale in the regular tread section! I just thought since it was the related purchase tread it might of have been ok!
I posted it in the classifieds. Hope it's ok to add the link here. I won't clutter this tread.
Thanks.

For Sale - 100 series TJM Rear Locker - Brand new

^ Yeah I was surprised to see your post gone as my response was written around it. (I had to edit it so it made sense).

Anyway, why did you change your mind on the locker?

Yeah if you haven't plumbed on board air, good way to go.

I have onboard air, but I just prefer the electronic. This is my "forever build" since my Dad and I picked it up and drove across the country together, so I'm sort of going all out on the parts I want.

But yeah, sorry about that Mods. My bad. :(

Hi all,

Based on a few experiences from all the buyers here including my self, I would add that you should assume that the o-ring is faulty on the actuator brass fitting. Go ahead and fix it before even having installer look at it. A friend of mine and my self both had faulty o-rings. It's a combination of the lack of use of grease during assembly and the o-ring being pinched and a tad too big. I fixed mine by adding grease now holding at over 100 psi with no leaks. I'm reaching out to TJM to get a replacement actuator but I think its safe to say everyone that got this deal should check that o-ring. Its very easy to do and fix. These units were built in 2012 on a Friday before a 3 day weekend.

Hi savirc-
I think your analysis is right on. That's just what I was telling my customer yesterday about his TJM actuator on his front 100 series TJM locker...that the "input" o-ring seemed dry....like a lack of grease. The date code on the box is May 30 2012 just like you were saying about 2012. On the 2012 calendar, it was a Wednesday....and it's after the 3 day weekend(Memorial) which means it really could have been built just before the weekend and boxed up after the weekend.

Here's my proven air tester....my actuator did leak.

taking the clip off the outer end(aluminum cap).... easy

Here it is laid out....getting the right side off(brass side) was difficult in that it did not just slide off...
it seemed semi-seized....like it was dry. Do you see any grease at all in the brass groove? It's dry.

and this side also takes a little finesse to get the rubber seal in without tearing.

dry

some minor damage to the seal....might have been caused by me trying to get it out. Hard to say.
But I re-assembled it with a gob of grease and no leaky now. I'm still reaching out to Wes for a new fresh actuator.

i was laughing at the age old idiom of things being built on a friday, i completely lost it when it actually turns out to be true, lol.

nice post and thanks for that exchange guys, bloody hilarious.

good to see this is still being offered at this price, my 100 series is new to me and this is a bit further down my list of things to do, i hope this deal is still offered by the time i'm ready.... i plan getting new gears and both lockers at the same time and going with AIR because while an elocker is nice, having on board air is great and i'm tired of having to store and have a compressor rolling around in the bin of the 4runner, the 100 series will just have it installed/permanently mounted so if feels cleaner.

thanks for the info on the seals and fixes, it really helps those of us coming down the line after you folks! awesome!

The deal on these lockers is long gone. Summit sold out in January-but the conversation and install notes continue on.

The title on the thread prob should be updated by OP to read "TJM locker Install Notes". This would make it more relevant.

It was hilarious... I was out of breath laughing... but yeah it explains a lot.

Is there a way to change the title? I tried looking but didn't find anything. I think a mod has to change it.

Good theory except the locker was made in Australia and Australia commemorates Memorial Day (ANZAC Day) in April.

Calling @Trunk Monkey for assistance....

oh dear lord what i have i started by being inattentive? lol

bummer i missed out on the deal, for some reason my brain didn't process the fact the item was closed out in the link, maybe missing out was so terrible that my mind just blocked it out, like when someone sees some horrible accident or something, lol.

oh well, my question now is, is this an issue with all TJM lockers or just the ones that were offered in this thread?
i have friends and coworkers who travel to AUS routinely and may have 'em look around for me next time i'm there and see what i can get.
