Actually that was an option (dealer option maybe) as you can see in the photo below.

I have it on mine including the Warn/Belleview 5687 winch.

The old factory mount on mine as well. The 8274 is still working great. Just changed the oil and spooled on some new line.

I welded a 3/8" plate to the back of a used bumper, then had it powder coated.

my 82 with a Warn 8274-50, it had an 8274 and same mount when i bought it from the original owner, but I swapped winches around from the 45lpb

uses a Warn mounting plate, I suspect from a Jeep.

Yes the plate us centered which looks to me like it centers the spool

About to mount my 8274 to the stock bumper and probably over thinking this. Due to the shape of the 8274, if you center the drum on the bumper the winch as a whole obviously looks offset to the passenger side by a considerable amount as in this pic. Has anyone considered offsetting the mounting a bit to make the winch as a whole a little more centered on the bumper? Or am I just being goofy?

Mount it with the drum centered. If you haven't converted to Saginaw power steering yet it will leave you enough room to do it in the future.

Yes. My40 had a home brew winch plate that mounted the 8274 higher and overhung the front of the bumper. This was constructed with a large plate that mounted between and bolted to the frame rails. I've since removed this and can take better photos if you want.
