I bought a UV-5R and the USB cable. Programmed it with all the normal Simplex frequencies with CHIRP.

Simple. I have a test scheduled for June 14th to get the license. It is a pretty nice radio (mine is camo :) )

I went the Baofeng route too before we went out to Ouray. Even though I am not licensed it was great to be able to be "in the loop" with the trail leaders, especially in a completely different environ. Gotta make time to do the test...

Also of note it was funny that on a couple spots, along Imogene Pass IIRC, and at base camp there were times when a couple of nice permanent setups with antennas that were tuned etc did not pick up transmissions but the handheld Baofeng pulled them in. I handed it off to a licensed person to TX back with and answered only when I was hailed but it worked out great. Had to run as the tail gunner on one trail b/c I was the only other with HAM onboard.

I programmed all the simplex channels in the 146 range, any others anyone would suggest?

I plan on adding the repeaters once I get licensed.

I may or may not have added a few FRS or GMSR channels, but that isn't legal, but useful if in an emergency.

The sickness is catching.

I hate snakes. Ran over over one coming home from father in laws and saw a skin in the rafters of his building that is a good 5 ft long.

Not a snake fan either but if they are black snake might as well leave it be or relocate it. They will usually take care of the copperheads and other vermin. We have a 4' one around our house and I have left it alone as long as it leaves my chickens and eggs alone its fine by me. It doesn't seem to pay us much attention as long as you don't mess with it.

We had a 5' King Snake living under our front porch in California. Our neighbors had issues with rattlers and mice, but we never did. I miss that snake… We have a pretty big Yellow Rat Snake living in our yard here in Charleston. Here's an old picture of him with my 80 in the background.

There is a pretty large black snake around here and I leave him alone because they eat the copperheads. Heather is deathly afraid of snakes so I don't tell her when I see one. She sees them and freaks, the only way to calm her down is shoot them with the 12 gauge. Killed a copperhead in the burn pile and blew away some dirty hay in the feed shed that she swore was a snake. Hey, I get to shoot my 12 gauge and it makes her happy :)
