Finished!

Needed a Right Angle AN-6 Fitting to make it clear the muffler tube. Looks good....

I found a company that can make a banjo to banjo with stainless steel teflon hose. I believe if we make it longer we can avoid having to have the 90 degree elbo that rocky had to use to clear the tail pipe. I think I can get these for $50 a piece. The hose can with stand to 200 degree temp of the oil. I just thought the stainless line was racy. If enough people are interested we may be able to get them cheaper. I was unaware of this problem for 30 years on my 74. I may in fact have a leak and not realize it. I am going to install one on my 74 and 76. The concept is a great one. If this doesn't work I will use the standard 37 degree fitting hose. This same company can make up either. Let me know which you are interested in. Sorry to steal the thread but its on topic. I am open to discussion on pros and cons to each design. At least we have a source.

Let's see a sample!

I have just ordered one with one end mounted and the other not so I get the length of hose needed. I will send it back to them to get the end crimped and at the same time order my other one. They are going to put a heat sheild around the hose so if your installation is close to the tail pipe it will protect the hose. This will add a about three dollars to the hose which I thought would be worth it. I have the transmission and tranny out of my 76 so matching the size is not a problem. It will be end June before I get to Phoenix to install the other one on my 74 and be able to see if there is any problems with the tail pipe on my installation. I have a header on my 74 so I don't know if the tail pipe will be an issue. When I get back from Phoenix I will let you know how the proto type worked on a functioning rig.

If you have your tranny and t-case out of the rig, replace the seal between the two and you won't need this silly hose!

If you change the breather on the transfer case it won't allow the pressure that causes the gear oil to bypass and you won't need any hose. It's British pipe thread. If it's already by passing the seal unscrew the breather and take it for a ride and test it for FREE

You are missing something - we are trying to make this as hard as possible!

 I hadn't seen many 80s owners involved yet :)hillbilly:)

and for what it's worth: I was just sayin' to hubby yesterday that I will install the bypass hose again when the H55 goes into my rig, no matter whether there's a leak or not - cheap insurance and peace of mind :meh:

You are going to H55 the 40? I want to see a build thread!

this is how I got it: "you have a good leak at the rear main seal" - "dang" - "fixing this will require dropping the transmission" - "why don't I switch in the H55 that this dude has for sale then, that would be an upgrade, no?" - "sure, knock yourself silly" . . . a day later "hey, this thing is so fxxxing huge and heavy there is not way we can fit in our garage, is there any chance we could store it in your shop for a short while?" :hillbilly:

and yes, the H55 has been holding that floor down for more than a year by now  - just a few days ago, the guy who sold it to me even inquired about buying it back  obviously, not started on that conversion yet, will keep you posted

the coming mods are going to be major in the scheme of my 40 and it took me a good while to overcome the anxiety of change  - I got it in late 2004, we put disk brakes on all around and rewired it in 2005, made it comfortable with a new driver's seat, carpet and new spring bushings, and since then, I have been wheeling the hell out of it :steer: :bounce: :steer: :grinpimp: :steer: alternately breaking frame and suspension parts here and there, and one birf   front bumper suffered quality mangleage, too  :whoops:

the next immediate mod planned for June/July is to install an actual steel rear sill (right now, it consists of silicone which we put in to seal the tub against water 8 years ago :hillbilly:) - the new sill will incorporate the looks for a body lift (which I have been told I need for the H55 due to having the tank under the seat) - the new sill will also provide solid mounting for the one-piece tailgate that's going to go in :bounce: -- stay tuned, there will be pics, promised

thanks for the interest in my truck  and hijack over

I'm in. Count me down for uber-blingy, unnecessary, insurance-peace-of-mind, trxfr-case-hose-mod.

We have to body lift our 40s an inch to take the H55?

We

maybe I am not understanding something here, but it sounds like a lot of work when the ready-made is only $15 more http://www.man-a-fre.com/parts_accessories/oilreturnkittransmissiontransfercase.htm
Some of the setups are pretty neat, but I built mine for under $10. I drilled and tapped both fill plugs to fit a large hose barb. Connected them with a long piece of fuel line, I think it was 3/8". DONE!! RAn my FJ 40 about 3 years like this, and my FJ 55 about 7 or 8 years, never had a problem with either one. Oops, I almost forgot, I did use a hose clamp on each end. John

Hate to support the HiJack, but here it is anyway. When installing an H55f, the top of the transmission and the shift tower are taller than an H 42 or H41 of a J30 3speed. So, you can just really hack up the tunnel, or since you are already redoing the rear sill and the mid floor support, then your already there, so do a 1-2" body lift to minimize the amount of hacking required to fit the tunnel over the transmission. as far as continuing the hijack:

that's what I gather - at least for the early 40s that have the tank under the passenger seat (and particularly if you are considering the option of using a TSM disk brake set-up for the parking brake if my conclusion from reading pirate is correct)

talked to Kurt - he says I need that lift

looked at MUD threads of years and years in the past: of the very few '72s (or similar vintage) that got H55s, there is mention of tank interference - if your tank is under the tub, dimensions are more favorable from what I understand

the fundamental problem is that the H55/split transfer case combo is missing the parking brake  (so you either have to add the TSM brake or get the parking brake set-up at the rear axle like the late trucks have)

and on top of all that: I have no space for a floor-mounted parking brake lever (which is what the later model 40s with the rear axle parking brakes have), I want to keep the early 40 dash-mounted parking brake pull
