Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Parts Program Discussion

In January 2020, Toyota began the Heritage Program to begin production of no longer available parts for the A70 and A80 Supra. In July 2020, Toyota added the 2000GT to the list of vehicles with parts production support through the Heritage Program.

Earlier today I made my frequent parts order call to my local dealership to get the common response, "part # XXXXX-XXXXX that you want to purchase is NLA". I'm a resourceful guy just like everyone on this site and I can do a lot to revive old worn bits but there is a limit to what can be rebuilt. Scouring fleabay for sketchy used parts isn't my idea of a fun afternoon; I'd rather be opening a Lexus/Toyota Genuine Parts box and installing a new part into my old cruiser. Why is Toyota supporting the Supra and 2000GT and not their most iconic/flagship vehicle, the vehicle that enabled them to enter new markets around the world and was largely responsible for the success of their company?

So I called Toyota's customer service at 800-331-4331 and spoke with Carrie W. (she's awesome BTW). I pitched this request and ended up on hold while she talked with a supervisor. She came back and said the supervisor response to my question was that they haven't had any significant volume of inquiry requests for adding the FJ25 or FJ40 to the Heritage Program, but they would send the program managers my request and... if they found there was enough demand they would likely add support for these vehicles. If you'd like to have access to new OEM parts that are currently NLA then please call the number and person listed above and put in a request. We may be able to get the Land Cruiser added to the Heritage Program if we flood them with requests. I may call them once every day until they get so fed up with me that they just do what I'm asking.

Going on a three year anniversary of the post. Think it's time to flood Toyota with requests why this wonder program is not directly available to loyal Toyota owners here in ths United States?

They don’t care about American feelings of being left out. The quicker we get that the easier it is being left behind and not being able to play with the big boy Japanese folks.

This is a “pay to play” experience. No matter how harsh that sound for the average American FJ40 owner from 1980 who still thinks that Toyota owes them something.

This program is for the JDM. If you want to play, contact a JDM parts source and you can play too and get the parts that are available.

By now I get that the program is geared toward JDM; however, it wasn't marketed as such when the program was first announced to much excitement.
I also question the point of having a JDM program, as there are very few 40 Series Land Cruisers in Japan. The vast majority of these vehicles were exported. The only rationale I can think of is that it's mainly a marketing exercise.

Good points, Roger. I have seen very large 4x series gatherings in Japan and I know there is a rabid restoration culture there for the 4x. That said, none of the parts they are marketing are anything really special.

Brake lines can be hand made.

Starters can be rebuilt with OEM Toyota parts or aftermarket parts.

Tail lamp assemblies can be made to work from available OEM parts from other years with some simple electrical modifications.

Exhausts can be custom made with very little issue.

Fusible links can be easily made.

Gauges can be rebuilt.

Brake cylinders are readily available in the aftermarket.

LSPV's direct from you!

Very few engine bits and again, geared for JDM engines (B family diesels).

Anyway, it's cool in general that Toyota is making some effort for these vehicles. But when considering price-point and logistics, even I shy away from buying much of it and I've certainly spent stupid amounts of money on OEM bits over the years.

As far as I know JDM stopped getting petrol 40 series after 1974 so the late 2F starter, exhaust parts or even the 12V 1978+ oil gage can't be targeted at the JDM trucks.
So there is still something that doesn't make sense in this program...

But sometime it is as simple as the department in charge of selecting the parts and having them produced, is not the same department in charge of selling them...

There is also the option that the lazy intern charged by his boss with this task is doing whatever is easier for him... so low hanging parts and the most simple distribution...

Sadly, Koyari-San retires this year after 39 years with Toyota. From what I recall he started in a brake group and worked on the tail end of the 6x Series among many other platforms, moving to the Land Cruiser chassis full time in 2001. He was the CE for the 200 and previous generation 7x Series. In the more recent years he's been working on the GR Heritage program and other heritage related projects. While he's retiring, he's not leaving the Land Cruiser scene in fact he plans help Toyota launch a community platform and will be with us at the Baja 1000 again this year

Also, my daily NLA parts order was: 17343-61020 hose between air bypass valve and check valve, 17342-61030 hose between smog pump and air bypass valve, 19220-61102 distributor vacuum advance (dual diaphragm style), 17810-61010 distributor air filter, at this point I gave up and ordered an air filter.
Agreed!!! Everyone needs to call in and request it be added to the Heritage Program. I sure will, and I (and others may want to too) will also give them the name of multiple websites devoted to serving the FJ's and trying to help supply parts, as well as maybe TLC and The FJ Company, and tell them to go on YouTube and search something like Toyota FJ40 and see how many results they get. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, so everyone help out, call the number, and start squeaking.

Click the link and there is a link in the announcement to take a survey for parts wanted.
Great question / idea. I'm new to the FJ40 scene, so I have no clue, but everyone working together to come up with a list is a great idea. I saw on a YouTube video documenting a 1971 Toyota FJ40 (just like the one I just bought) that things like the brake cylinders, license plate light, done light, door seals, window seals, and headliner can be issues.

After submitting a response to this post, I just noticed the date it was originally posted. Duh..... I feel silly! Sorry.

They realize that the fj40 is big in the US lol. Why do you think they came out with the Land Cruiser 250? They just don’t care about bringing the heritage parts to us unfortunately

Sweet sweet sweet!

In the end it's the 3rd time I'm ordering parts from this program, so not so useless for me.
My rear brake cylinders were done in 2018 with aftermarket parts and the rear right is already leaking... So good timing to do it correctly this time with proper parts.

The brake shoes are normally available outside of the program but there was 1.5 months delay from manufacturer on them... and they were 5 time the price of aftermarket shoes so on this I went the easy route.

So you are saying the cost of OEM available thru normal channels were five times the cost of aftermarket? If so what the cost on these OEM wheel cylinders thru the program. Are these available directly thru the program in Europe? I know the section of exhaust pipe I'm after is on eBay and by the time I pay all the import fees is well over $700 USD. Haven't try any of the small parts since I have a number of used parts laying around already.

Over $700 for a piece of exhaust pipe?!?!

The cylinders were 76€ a piece at Amayama (before shipping and import taxes). They were a little bit cheaper through Buyee/YahooMarket where the official GRH store is located. (But ordered though Amayma because I needed some regular parts also and paying only 1 shipping/tax was a bigger saving.)

The brake shoes are listed in France at euro4x4parts at 245€ vs 52€ (all tax included) for the aftermarket on the same vendor.
In Japan they were 135€ (+ shipping, and it's heavy + import taxes).
In both case not in stock and with delay to reorder from supplier anyway vs delivered in 48h for the aftermarket ones.

I was a bit constrained by time here, so it also had an influence on my end choice, but in the end the shoes are a far more simpler part than the cylinders, so less risk.

Never considered those but the aftermarket wheel cylinders are listed for 53€ in France FYI.

Not 100% sure how the Heritage Program works? Seems some parts were available until the program started, then suddenly NLA. The exhaust I've been looking for has been NLA on Amayama for a long time.

I did search that Buyee site and only a few Land Cruiser exhaust pipes come up. None for the 40 series. The one is still available on eBay for $691.33 USD. Has a best offer but when I did seller came with only a $10 discount. Even with free shipping you have to add in taxes and customs fees then your still well over $700. Not sure the length of the pipe but it's probably better around $200 a foot. Hoping it It can be made locally. I know both the three bolt flanges used are already being made.

Not sure how it works also but the parts are available through Amayma in my experience.
It seems that the official GR store on Rakuten (and not Yahoo as I said before) is available here through Buyee (to relay outside of Japan): https://buyee.jp/rakuten/shopping/store/top/toyotagazooracing

Now for sure shipping depends on weight and size... so shipping oversea a complete exhaust VS wheel cylinders is very different...
Also on parts price it varies a lot... The parts I bought the 3 times are reasonably priced I think... But as I mentioned multiple time some parts like the starter are crazy expensive and not worth it... Toyota parts prive have always been a bit random, even before this program ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve used JapanRabbit to buy from Rakuten. It’s a great service. Japan Rabbit | Proxy-buying from Japan - https://japanrabbit.com/

FWIW, SOR is now repoping the early F two-bolt style downpipe and flange.

not exactly mr. Czar ......

- there front pipe may in fact be the same mandrel bent shape ...

- but the location TOYOTA collapsed the pipe together some how like compressing a metal-accordion ...
- appears to be a this disc of metal , i would think a solid round ring , that maybe had a bit oval , or a sqared round ring maybe to it would be below ?

- the slip-2-bolt-flange appears maybe stainless , but maybe its Not ? i cant think whole over look that added detail here ?

- sor had had a few various pre- 2F down pipes over the years including the OEM high-gloss BBQ painted one , that was NOT oem Toyota

- so i would thing at the end of the day , they would have test fitted it and drove around for a few or fewer 100's Kilometer's

- here a few NOS ones below , you be the judge ...

WE have always had to fend for ourselves. Even when the 40 was still going to the dealerships for service we never got much love. Ask for parts and get a blank stare or parts guy look for 5 min to tell you ¨naaa can't get that¨(never had a Beno near me lol) I honestly think they knew parts in usa were at a limited supply back then and didn't want to sell to guy working on his own truck. I would get the ¨bring it in and we can look at it¨ .... why bother because you said you couldn't get the part? at that moment i knew how much they cared about the cruiser owner who works on their own truck.

The only place at the time to reliably get oem was from Marv... Even the hard to find parts like my oem bows (thanks again Marv!!! we miss you)

overseas has always been the way to get the parts you need .... or... find an alternate useable part. The best part about the cruiser is it was so generic usually any other makes part would work. I got GM parts .... modifieds parts... aftermarket parts... nissan parts... and lord help me even ford :meh: on my truck. The trucks will literally outlast generations and keep going.
