Toyo OpenCountry AT3 Experience?

Great thread folks. As a 100-series owner much of this data helped inform my decision to go Toyo over Falken - thank you all!

Came from Ko2 275/70/r18 that had 7/32nd remaining after running 40,000 miles. Went with the same size @ 35psi given my stock application.

My decision to change were mixed between 1) the Ko2s were getting pretty loud/rough, 2) wanting the latest tech in market, 3) the product team & their affinity to Cruisers, & 4) my needs are for road trips / daily comfort / aesthetics / limited mountain usage.

My impressions thus far ...subjectively the Toyo's ride better already in city/highway. NVH, while improved, still shows typical A/T noise. The noise is lower at all speeds. Is it because they're new or it's a better tire .... meh, I don't really know. This one, while quieter, does have a pitch higher tone through 80 mph vs. the Ko2 (my subjective $.02) with no A/C or radio.

Here's what it looks like ... hopefully ya'll don't mind a little 100-series photos mixed in!?

I’ve got an 04 lx 470 and am in the Falken Toyo debate myself. Do you mind telling me what what sealed the deal for gout Toyo’s? also how are you liking them? Any winter experienc?

Having put a lot of miles on both Falken AT3Ws and Toyo AT3s.

IMO, the differentiator is that Falken is the more aggressive, deeper tread, and incrementally better all around performance tire. With trade to the Toyo as an incrementally better daily driving tire. It's subtle but the difference is there. And both outstanding benchmark tires IMO, that exist at the medium to more aggressive end of the AT tire spectrum.

There are tires that have better qualities in certain things, but these are both well balanced tires all around with no glaring faults. True AT tires.

Huh?! No glaring faults?! Benchmark tires?! Those are big (false) claims by you…oh wait that is just on par with your style of spreading false info.

Falkens are heavy as heck tires due to using cheap steel plies, wear out quicker despite deep treads, and have thin sidewall. But i will say that Falkens are good value.

Toyo AT3 is pretty bad in most areas per two independent comparisons! Noisy. Horrible in rain. Not great off-road in term of traction. And not comfortable on road. Maybe Toyo needs to fire Joe Bacal?

Benchmark you say???

Since trying the AT3 LT variant am now driving a 200 series fit with p-metric 285/70/17 Toyo AT3s / rock warriors.

Between more sidewall and the lighter construction, plus running at 32 psi, these work just fine for my mostly highway needs.

I would buy these again.

I’m very, very happy with my Toyo AT3s. Much happier than I was with my KO2s, though size and load rating did change at the same time.

Title says "Toyo OpenCountry AT3 Experience". And we have a raging kitty commenting in this thread with less than zero experience.

My points stand. AT3 is a excellent all around tire. Sure, it's not the best at everything, but scores big on balance and all around qualities.

Seriously Mad, give it a rest. We get that you're not a fan. Loud and clear, many many times. No need to start down the ad hominem attack path on Tek. He's one of the most straight shooters and tech-savvy posters. This isn't a win-the-argument-at-all-costs type of place.

Why do I need experience when you have tire experts commenting and comparing and pretty much destroys your statements. No need for personal insults. It just shows your colors.

Seriously mad, get a grip. To the ignore list you go!

Side bar: the ignore function is huge. Just click on a user and hit the ignore button. It’s like noise cancelling headphones on a flight. Ahh

Can you tell this to all my customers who still need convincing to buy my tech even when I show our tech is rated as a leader according to industry experts?

By this standard I should be driving an Escalade lol

I've only had to use the ignore function once on this forum, which shows it has good members, mostly...

When I was at Discount tire today waiting to have my wife’s tires swapped out for winters, a customer brought in a beautiful new green Tundra TRD with bronze wheels. Anyways, apparently don’t buy Gladiator M/T tires(never heard of that brand) as he kept complaining how bad they vibrate not matter how much balancing they did. The DT guy even told him that they don’t recommend that tire often and guess what, a couple of the DT guys love their Toyo AT3 tires. I’ve see a lot of Jeep and 4Runners rollin’ Wildpeaks so they must like them as well.

I went with the Toyos on the 200 due to lower weight (already have the Falkens on the 100). Less rotating mass = incrementally better performance. Both tires are great and I would buy either one again. Also, Falken used to be a less expensive tire. That was no longer the case when I got the Toyos. Both sets are E rated LT tires.

Think 40 psi is what is recommended.

Not for a P metric :)

I moved from a LT to allow for lower pressure and get closer to a factory quality ride.

Mission accomplished

Gaijin, school me what is the correct psi for P rated?

That's a pretty broad question... What tire specifically are you talking about? Mounted on which vehicle - LC200 or LX570?

The "...p-metric 285/65/17 Toyo AT3s / rock warriors..." tires that @kcobourn mentioned do not exist.

Toyo do, however make a P285/70R17 117T SL Open Contry A/T III. See it here: Toyo Tires

If that's the tire you're asking about (please correct me if I'm wrong), then:

The RCTIP for a P285/70R17 117T SL tire on a LC200 is 27psi F/R.

The RCTIP for a P285/70R17 117T SL tire on an LX570 is 26psi F/R.

HTH

My experience is with Wildpeak AT3s E Load - had for 14k miles at the time when I got a sidewall gutted on tree root while off-roading. Not mad, the root was nasty and people mistakenly assume a tree root isn't destructive but it can be, especially side bites.

Anyways, didn't have certs at DT because the tire had a 55k warranty. They measured at 14/16 with 14k miles on them! That's impressive. They paid me 85% of tire value, and I bought another - ran that set for 40k more miles. BTW 14/16" is insane, because some new tires don't even come that high....

Tires were pretty quiet but not always easy to balance. However, I think the balance issue could have been a bad wheel, and the tire got blamed. This was on a 4Runner too btw, notorious for steering wheel vibes (and not good vibes).

Have Toyo on my spare tire right now, but no real world experience. Nothing to report other than I like how it looks :)

So far KO2s have been fantastic and on currently on both T4R and LC200. I just want to try something different because I enjoy the first hand experience of using stuff. Regarding reviews - and my own personal opinions - they are all that...opinions, amateur and professional. Elevation - precipitation - road grades - temperature of area all affect results. 3 Peak is enough for me because it snows for 2 days every 3 years. If I lived in Ouray, Co? I suspect chains and winter tires would be in order.

Note that while p285/70r17s at 26/27psi will technically not come apart from heat failure, that is too little pressure to safely support the sidewall of that size tire during cornering. I and others have tried it, and the ride is super cush, but any dynamic driving is pretty sketchy if you pay attention.
