I think the biggest thing that will drive the politeness out of the 200 board is the frustration that comes along with newbies signing up and starting new thread after new thread of the same worn out old topics like “what size tire can I fit?” and “is the AHC any good?” and my favorite “I have a really rare use case for my 200 - I want to daily drive it and use it for exploring on the weekends what should I do?”. I went from posting all the time here to biting my tongue and just skipping over most of the topics because it’s so annoying to see the same crap posted every day. I actually think it’s unfortunate this board is so helpful to the newbies because it just encourages them to be lazy and not search or investigate on their own. Many of the more technical topics get ignored or buried quickly in favor of the same old topics. I’ve reduced my view and contribution time here by over half what it was a year ago (arguably a good thing especially if you ask my wife), and I think that’s going to go down even further. I also think apart from the obvious guys here who wheel frequently, the majority just want their 200 to look cool and won’t wheel. To each their own, but that annoys me and likely others and will probably lead to more snarkiness and less patience in the future.
I hear ya. I noticed that the 200 section was more polite than any other forum I had been on. It was great for me when I was getting my bearings with how I wanted to build my car but I've already checked out from reading most posts. I just follow certain people's build threads in case they do something cool.

It'd be nice to have a sub section for trips reports and even trip invitations. I'd subscribe to that.

Pretty much this.

Utimately, I don't dump money into my vehicles to look cool on the interwebs and glean praise from strangers. If people like it, cool. If not, keep your opinion to yourself. Especially when you try to pass off your opinion as fact. It's like going to a dealership and giving people s*** for buying a specific color you don't like of a vehicle you own.

Need more sticky topics. Or maybe a wiki for the repeating topics.

As a techie I’m happy to help if the group wanted to create something

People already ask questions, constantly, that are easily answerable by looking at the FAQ.

It's the state of society, people want information delivered instead of seeking out the answer themselves. Today's generation would have blood shooting out of their ears if they had to use the dewey decimal system.

I agree, we should make an effort to improve the FAQ. It certainly seems to have stalled out. That is the only viable solution to the redundant and lazy questions.

I think the 200 FAQ. Really needs a more descriptive title.
Right now it just says start here… But that could be taken to simply mean how do you navigate the forum, etc.

To make it more clear to the newbies…
I wish the title said something like this:

“200 FAQ: Basic Mod Q’s Answered Here!”

I think this would better attract noobs who simply don’t realize what the FAQ offers in terms of specific mod info. Usually a faq is just about forum use.

@Romer ...What do you think?

Being new to the 200, I definitely appreciate the FAQ. However I do like @linuxgod idea about the Wiki. It's a little more relevant in terms of society and obtaining knowledge and could easily be a living document that lots of people could contribute to instead of a FAQ which has to be updated by a limited number of people. Also, think how useful the wheel, tire database has been, whether it's worked or not we can factor into a discussion for a better means of getting information out there.

TonyPs prediction of 2018: You make a 'wiki', the same questions will continue.

So is the intent to limit the same new questions or make a database that is easier to update/more current? Or both?

Not sure what the intent of making a 'wiki' is. It wasn't my idea. Though there already is a consolidated database for info which new people either don't know exists or just don't use, why make another that will suffer the same fate? Inherently lazy people will be lazy and lack self-sufficiency regardless of spoon-feeding the info to them.

Maybe just not answering questions is the solution. It's like the welfare system, if you keep giving people incentive to not be self-sufficient, they'll continue to do so. But someone will end up responding eventually.

Or whatever, this thread is off the rails.

Fair enough, I think we continue to welcome the noobs and direct them to the FAQ in a polite manner.

I tend to write up trip reports on my home club site, but it would be cool to have a trip report site here. My guess is there probably is one somewhere on mud that's not vehicle specific. Here's my most recent writeup from a trip last weekend in my Tacoma: Grand Mesa exploratory run 6/15-6/17 - Rising Sun Member Forums

PS - sorry for the hijack Tony.

There's a trip section

Trails - Events - Expeditions

Or check your local off road club website.

That said, I don't post in that section or very much at all locally for a few reasons.

When LCXC 2.0 rolls around next year I'll probably only post here since this is where it started. That and some of the 70 crowd will be too busy yelling at the wall at the local VFW or whatever weird stuff they're into.

So is the intent to limit the same new questions or make a database that is easier to update/more current? Or both?

I've used wiki's at various jobs with regularity. We have email lists and Outlook is searchable, but it's a question of how easy it is to find the info you want. The forums are good places to have conversations, but searching (forums or email for that matter) is often a HORRIBLE way for people to find the correct answer to a question.

Hypothetical: If I want to know something about what brake upgrade options there are I don't know if I should search for "bigger brakes" or "brembo brakes" or "BBK" or "tundra brakes" or "slotted rotors" or something else. If I just search for "brakes" I find 200 posts and a few dozen threads I need to weed through. Then if I do find a good thread it often has a lot of questions and noise it in, lots of OT posts, and I have to read through pages and pages of info trying to figure out the answer. Will tundra brakes work in an LC? What parts do I need to make them work? Do they work on 16" steelies? Why are there 3 pages about 33" vs 35" tires in this thread? The n00bs post "will X work" questions that we've already answered because even after reading the thread they may not be sure, and if someone is willing to drop $1000 on a Tundra brake conversion they want to know if it's going to work rather than find out half way through that they need to drop $3k more on tires and wheels to fit their setup.

I would look at like this: a wiki would provide useful summary answers to questions in which the answers might be buried deep in some thread. FWIW I try to do permanent write-ups of the more complicated stuff I do in Wordpress outside the forum as well, like the solar setup on my trailer (2015 Lance 2185 Solar Installation) or the Towing with a 200 thread (Towing with a 200-series Toyota Land Cruiser). The idea is that if someone asks a question I can just send them to a link which has The Answer(tm) rather than a 15 page thread with almost 300 posts where I was probably asking more questions than I was answering.

Maybe I should PM @Romer or another mod rather than clutter up your build thread with this discussion.

Not sure about all the talk of a wiki or limiting questions. We don't limit questions. New members should not be afraid to ask questions and if they get treated poorly I should be contacted and will intervene

As far as a wiki, I created an FAQ. Anyone who wants to create an FAQ thread and PM me to add it is more than welcome

Since as Tony said his build is complete, this thread is now closed
