Today, not so funny - roll over

Dammit, so sorry to hear but so thankful that you are ok! Will plan for you to be my wingman at Relic Run again! May be in the 62 this year.

OMG no!!! SO glad you are ok, but people don't understand not every vehicle on the road can stop on a dime with ABS and anti-skid blah blah. Drives me crazy because when I drive Dozer and leave ample following distance, people inevitably see that a spot to fill and cut me off. Damn, just damn man.

Used to happen to me all the time when I used to drive my 65 mustang with drum brakes to work. People were super impatient that I would drive so slow. I would just wave. But I had a few similar incidents just like Joe’s obviously not as serious as this though.

Oh and Joe if you need help with the 40. Just let me know.

I'm so sorry Joe. I'm glad you are okay. @mtweller, @SFROMAN and I have had the same thing happen that you did, only it didn't involve a roll over. People just pull right in front of older vehicles thinking that their brakes are just like theirs. Then when you do go to slam on your brakes, ABS isn't a thing.

Get better soon bud. Shoot us an update on if we can help with making the truck right again.

Holy cow, Joe! glad you're relatively OK. I rolled an xcab 4x4 3 1/4 times and walked away, beaten, bruised, and battered. take it easy for the next week or two if you can. you're going to find sore parts you never knew you had.

I hope for a speedy recovery of you and your 40. Let me know if there is anything I can do. I'm right down the road from you.

Hi All, thanks so much for all of the thoughts and well wishes.

I just got back from WakeMed trauma (Rex quasi-hospital sent me there), thankfully all I have is 2 broken ribs. Everything else checked out fine. Seems I'll be out of commission / light duty for 6-8 weeks.

You have no idea how thankful I am that my injuries are not more severe.

And being grateful that neither my wife, Susana, nor our dog Jacob was with me actually brings tears to my eyes.

I'll try to get some more photos the next few days. Anyone in the area is welcome to stop by if you want to see the damage before anything is done.

@JohnVee I do have the MT "Jackson" cage in the garage, tbh - and I know i'm being a chicken-s*** - I couldn't imagine driving without a full cage now.

The lap belt kept me in place, however the roll impact broke the seat free from the body. When the 40 stopped, I unsnapped the belt and crawled out w/ the seat on my back.

I drive this thing cautiously, for exactly the reasons several of you stated @mtweller @stevezero @Green Hell Mustang @SFROMAN Never tailgate and leave plenty of space, stick right around or under the speed limit, 2 hands on the wheel 99% of the time, always checking periphery and being conservative. That other vehicles can stop on a dime with control is really a technological miracle.

I can't roll around and get pix underneath, but here are a few more; there's many more in my media gallery.

Damn Joe sorry to hear this. Sucks. Very glad you came away relatively unharmed.

ouch...that sux for the cruiser. glad you are ok, 2 cracked ribs aint no joke...peace and prayers buddy.....try to not overdo it watching the march madness tourney...

Sad to see this, but glad you are ok Joe.

Man that was tough to read. Words cannot express... Glad you are alive and with us still. The '40 will get fixed, let me know if you need help along the way... Rest up buddy.

Here is what I am thinking, always appreciate anyone's thoughts or suggestions. I had wanted to preserve this 40 and keep it as stock as possible - well, that's kind of out the window now... I am not interested in investing in a full or quasi-resto.

I have full coverage on it. I don't think I'm going to call in a claim though due to impact on our rates and negligible insured value.

That said:
  • Get it running, hopefully this will be as easy as removing plugs to shoot the oil out, check all other fluids etc. Everything looks good on the surface, but I can't do a full mechanical inspection currently. Think it may need a radiator.
  • Adios hard top, sides, doors, rear hatch.
  • Hello MT cage + soft top that've been in my garage a few months now.
  • Get rid of stock bench seats in favor of the buckets @forrest5000 passed along - with the seat mounting tied into the cage.
  • Straighten out the panels as much as possible; look for deals/hand-me-downs (primarily just hood, front fenders, window frame and windshield).
  • Get that darn rear sill and quarters rust replaced finally lol; now I can do it here and not feel terrible if I do a middling job. (I have the AWLTeq sill and RealSteel quarter patches).
  • I see a front disk swap in the near future. @Mtbcoach still have that axle? or @jfz80 I called dibs on the axle under that 55 @SFROMAN sent your way.
  • Paint it purple. Well, not really...
The fiberglass top had one corner broken off + a bit of its edge: does this have any value on the open market; or, can someone in ONSC use it in exchange for a beer?

The rear hatch got bent a bit, but it definitely looks easily repaired. I will sell this. Glass is good, and it has the OEM gas struts (minus gas).

The pass side upper rear body + glass are good, I will sell this. Driver side didn't fare as well, unsure if its salvageable.

Doors got banged up a bit, but are still useful/repairable, they'll be available.

All seats + frames will be available, incl rear long jumpseats. They all need upholstered, I believe frames are good but in need of cleaning/paint.

I won't be doing anything for 6-8 weeks, but if anyone's interested in parts above, you're welcome to make an offer and come pull them.

I have two front doors. They are not the best but they are good. They are your is you want them.

If you paint it purple, consider Purple 268 . . .official branded color of Kansas State University :)

Glad to hear you are recovering, Joe!!

Right on, Joe. It's now a survivor in TWO aspects! DO what you want with it and wear the imperfections, flaws and "experience" with pride. Remember when you wanted to sell it? Now you don't have to be so picky about every little thing it gets. I say savor that.
