The 40 series is my bread and butter here at Tilda Bogue Service Station

I do F and 2F motors. No V8 swaps or diesels. Mainly because I kkow nothing about either and try my best to stay in my lane.

I have sort of a "formula" that I've perfected to make these things stop, start, steer and drive better than when they were sold new.

Below you will find links to the 40s that I have built since I started doing this as a business.

This tired old Cruiser was built the month and the year I was born. November 1968.

It is tired. Old. Worn out and needs to get in the gym.

Weenie 3. My first build for a customer.

I picked up this super low mileage, completely whipped 1974 FJ40 from a friend who dug it up off of a farm in Louisiana.

My friend Ben Foltz wanted the truck and also wanted me to work on it.

He laid out what would be the framework for my "40 formula"

I kept it a long time because he is a Yankee and did not want it up in the ice.



So it's @fireball s fault Im a full time grease monkey


This thing ended up coming back to my shop years later because Ben sold it and let me build him another rig.

Rustic Green 40's are stacking up around here in Mississippi. 3 in my group of friends alone, hence the "3" in the name. Green Weenie 3, aka Weenie 3.....

Backstory:

This 40 was bought new in Louisiana in 1974 and lived a hard life on a farm, I have a mound of registration papers stretching all the way back until the owner rolled it into a pole barn in 2005 and it just sat. And sat. And sat.

Earlier this year, a Special Forces soldier convinced the owner to let him have it. Said soldier is a killer, not a mechanic and the job proved to be too much for him. My friend Boyd, aka...

Then @jomelo came into my life.

This guy changed my trajectory at the most perfect time.

Covid.

Just before everything went crazy I started working on his Mustard 78. My second commercial job while I was still working for Pfizer full time.

What an amazing truck. This one ended up leaving then coming back later for a BUNCH of upgrades a few years later.

Build Thread '1978 FJ40 Mustard Yellow - almost perfect thread.'

I’m sitting on a plane to Oregon as I write this up. I don’t really have any plans for a build but like to at least keep something going to remind myself of things I’ve done or want to do. Last week I scooped up a 1978 FJ40 from @thecrazygreek. The rig was exactly what I was looking for and I was already planning to take a little trip this week. So here I am flying to Portland.

A little later in 2020 I made a deal with @Drewk where I installed a Holley Sniper on his FJ40 and fixed some other messes on it in trade for a wicked cool 1967 FJ40. Both were Red hence the name.

His truck had the suspension way out of whack as you can see in this photo.

This thread served as a "how to" install a Mosley Motors Sniper kit for years until I made a new stand alone thread.

Build Thread 'Texas Reds - The Tale of Two Red 40’s'

A few weeks ago my friend @cbmontgo put me in touch with one of his good friends about working on his red 1977 FJ40.

If you are a TLCA member, you may have seen this 40 in the latest issue of Toyota Trails with Project Pikachu on a big trip through Colorado.

When Drew called, we discussed what he wanted done on his FJ40 with the focus being on installing a Holly Sniper.

I told him I was pretty much finished with the Mustard 78 I was working on and I could fit him in next.

We made some loose plans and planned to meet in the middle and swap trucks.

This was the second FJ40 I did for @jomelo

It was a very cool project and the first true frame off I had ever dealt with. We purchased a started project during Covid from Gabe Douglas.

Pueblo Brown was born. Amazingly enough later through some crazy horse trading this one ended up back here in Mississippi with one of my good friends.

I have had this 1972 fj40 fst for years now. It has 42,000 original miles. I purchased it in pieces from the guy who owned it since 1974. I have his original title from 1974. He took it apart in 1978 to build a rock crawler. Thank God he didn't get to far with the project before he met wife...

I had a local guy bring me a complete turd that was "restored" by a guy in North Mississippi. The non Cruiser color paint job was great but everything else was horrible. So this one went down to nothing and came back as one of the best looking FJ40s ever

A few weeks ago an old friend came to the CottonLand monthly gathering and we were discussing his 1971 FJ40. He’s had it a few years but he’s never been able to fully enjoy it because it just never drove and ran correctly.

I was just finishing up the CBrown 60 and was headed to get my next project the Seminole 45. I told him I’d ride by one day and give it a look-see and we could come up with a plan.

After I got the Seminole 45 to a stopping point waiting for a motor I decided I’d just go ahead and get the 71 Forty and start ordering parts and work on it while I was waiting.

I had another local hit me up to build him an "FJ"

I grew up with him. He told be he wanted it for his farm. No top needed. Just get him a cool one.

I found this powder blue 74 and him being a huge Ole Miss fan he flipped over it

It turned out to be a total turd and we replaced everything. He blew up the motor driving it 85 on the interstate so it got a nice new motor.

It's local so I get it back from time to time. He drives it everywhere all seasons with no top. Rain or shine.

It’s finally time to turn the page on the Mustard 78 build and move to the next project

I had a local friend as me to find him a good FJ40. Did not want a top. Something he can run around town in nice weather and around his farm in the Mississippi Delta during the season.

I knew of a good one in Texas and secured it about a month ago.

Texas Tan was next. This truck's owner would later let me build him an awesome FJ60

Texas truck that came from one of my college buddies. Awesome truck. I did this one in two stages and then he sold it to a guy that would later get me to build him a much nicer truck.

Repeat customers is what my shop sees a lot of

An old college friend calls me and tells me he has an FJ40 that he needs to sell. Lives in Houston. Got a divorce. The thing sits in his 2 car garage.

He’s the second owner. Texas truck. It has some rust but it’s patina rust. Truck is one color which is all that I care about.

Looks like it got the Proffitt Cruiser treatment way back when. Bucket seats, power steering and a very well burned in shackle reversal.

The Baja 69 got its name because the owner had taken it on a solo Baja expedition years before. Total battle wagon. This thing now serves time between the wilds of Austin Texas and a west Texas ranch.

I absolutely loved this build.

This 1969 FJ40 has had a good hard life. It’s been with its current owner around 20 years living in and around the Texas hill country.

The owner contacted me about getting it safe to drive around his neighborhood and town instead of it being relegated to ranch life as it has been for the last few years.

He sent along this book that had his story in it and why I call it the Baja 40

The Blue Bird 67 was a forgotten gem that came free with a 1967 FJ45 project my customers bought from Overland Outfitters in Arizona where @OGBeno runs the show.

This thing sat in the yard and I truly thought it was a lost cause until it came time to work it and I discovered an incredibly complete rust free 1967 fj40

It turned out amazing.
