It’s finally time to turn the page on the Mustard 78 build and move to the next project

I had a local friend as me to find him a good FJ40. Did not want a top. Something he can run around town in nice weather and around his farm in the Mississippi Delta during the season.

I knew of a good one in Texas and secured it about a month ago.

I’ve been collecting parts for it the whole time. Sticking with my usual “formula” for this one but with a few new to me things. Phillip drove it up last Sunday. He’s a friend of 50 years and he’s so stoked about it. His wife said he hit 75 mph all the way up to my farm in the ole F1.5 / 3 speed ……

In!

This truck is solid and complete. A little rust in the rear fender area. Texas truck. Lived in the hill country for 35 years then went to Houston. It pretty much needs everything gone through. The paint has some kind of dopey rough texture coating over the stock paint. I decided to test the waters on smoothing this rough coating down in the back to make sure it will polish smooth.

CLR and scotchbrite followed by polish and wax. It’s smooth now but it’s going to be a LOT of work to do the whole truck.

@cruiseroutfit supplied all the new lights and reflectors and such. I got the marker light, reflector and new lights installed. I pulled the old light and it was horrible. It’s all cleaned up and the cavity is full of fluid film

Great looking truck. Why does it have a 1.5 and a 3 spd in it?

Ah, get it. I have a sept 73 truck and it still has the old tail lights, not the longer rectangles. I thought it was a 75 truck when I saw the lights. Awesome find for sure.

Part of the “formula” on these is to ditch the rattle ass swing out for a 4 Plus tire carrier. These bad ass swing outs allow you to mount a real spare tire and have nothing hanging down the body and the best is they are 100% rattle free.

I got these drill bits just for these vertical frame drills. Thanks @Ozark cruiser for turning me on to them

Also. This bed liner crap over the edge of the tub was horrific to remove

Spent the morning working my way around the drivers side of the tub.

CLR and steel wool seems to get this texture off best.

Griots complete compound then wax.

All new lights and emblems. The bumperette and Licence bracket are in the growing Powder coat pile.

Moving forward. Slow and steady. I wish I could get all the way to the blue but it’s huge that I can make it smooth for wax. This paint is way too good for an oil rub like some of my other trucks

Hard to tell on vertical surfaces how much it helped

After

Unplugging the marker lights. Nothing electrical works on this truck. Every fuse is likely blown with this kind of awesome everywhere

Fender after. Now I think you can tell how much it’s helping

Which wheel is that on the spare?

Awesome work as always @wngrog. Can you pls share specs on dem dill bits? Me lookin for sum.

Man. This hood was hell. After I polished it out I was not happy so I did another CLR scrub and a re polish and wax. I’m pretty happy.

The vent was of course clogged. It’s cleaned out and have new hoses for it. Rust converter and Fluid Film. All good.

One fender left. I may die.

10 hours later. All I have left is the grill area but I’ve got to make myself some room cutting off those huge ass lights

You can see the clear coat that gave this thing the cool powder look over the Capri Blue

Now that it does not feel like sandpaper I’m happy to move along to whats next
