A few weeks ago an old friend came to the CottonLand monthly gathering and we were discussing his 1971 FJ40. He’s had it a few years but he’s never been able to fully enjoy it because it just never drove and ran correctly.

I was just finishing up the CBrown 60 and was headed to get my next project the Seminole 45. I told him I’d ride by one day and give it a look-see and we could come up with a plan.

After I got the Seminole 45 to a stopping point waiting for a motor I decided I’d just go ahead and get the 71 Forty and start ordering parts and work on it while I was waiting.

I grabbed it last week and then started ordering parts.

I was gone to Florida then to the Roundup so I had time for things to start stacking up.

Today it got real.

The one great thing about this truck is that it’s got a great paint job. It’s not an OEM 40 color but I like it. I think maybe its FJ Cruiser green.

Dunno really. That said, it’s a nice paint job with what seems like little Bondo.

The plan is basically what I do….make it drive straight. Stop straight. Ride good. Look good.

Step one.

Dobinsons IMS

Step 2

Yokohamas on City Racer 16s

Step 3

Take the turd Weber equipped F/3 speed out and replace it with a 2F/Split Case/Sniper EFI

You know, “The Formula”

Yesterday I unboxed all these goodies and loaded them up in the Goat

I dropped the tires and wheels at my local fella that mounts and balances with a bubble balancer and uses used weights. He’s always on the money. Knows how to line the green dots with the valve stem and all

Next I ran down to Powder Keg and grabbed the Dobinsons IMS that @Ozark cruiser sent to me

When I got home I tore out the interior to get the driveline ready to pull from the top and ran into my first problem. The painter who is a good painter obviously does not work on Land Cruisers because he covered all the tranny hump bolts with bed liner. LOTS of bedliner.

I had to use a wire wheel to grind the heads clean in order to get the 10mm on them and a razor to cut out the hump

No surprise, this is just a paint job over a dirty ass truck. I’m not sure how people do this, but they do.

Either way. It has begun. Stay tuned…..

I have never understood pulling the trans hump to get tranny out??? Why not lower the rear engine on the the bell housing mounts and pull it out? What am I missing??

I love selling you parts and watching you work your greatness with them

Nolan, where do you source the tires? Whats a good price to pay? ( I use a bubble balancer! Learned how in high school auto shop!)

eBay has the best prices with the free shipping. I never do that if I’m using a real tire store for mounting and balance but for this guy, he does not sell tires.

The 255/85-16 are about $250 each.

The 285/75-16 are about $225 each.

Yokohamas have a yellow dot. If it is mounted at the valve stem the tire usually needs very little weight with quality wheels

Got my first look under this one. Seems the fella my friend got it from is a great painter but not so good at things you can’t see unless you look …..

Frame is full of mud. Yeah I know that’s common but it won’t leave here like that

I also asked if the lights ever worked and he confirmed what I already figured after looking at the high beam switch lol

Great looking army green! Looking forward to the "formula" treatment on this one.

Putting some measurements down so I remember, with these 4” Rough Country sprangs and these square tires (33x12.50) tires

38” to the bottom of the fender pretty much all around and the tires are a whopping 31” tall.

Time to rip more stuff out once this tornado passes …… Figured I’d get a video for the insurance company 😬😬

@wngrog those cityracer 16's make a big difference to the ride? That 71 Spring Green project is headed my way now from Idaho, so putting my shopping list together now.

Ride? Probably not. The 16” wheel just opens you up to a better selection of tires. There is a thread in the tire section about true heights of 33x10.50-15s and most are barely 32” tall mounted. Some are 31” or less like these turd tires (Mud Claw Radials)

There is also a steel wheel tech thread that gives you more options as well.
