Was the gunked plug loose or is there a spark tube seal leaking? If the seal, that might be the source of the gunk. You can try to retorque the bolts if so. If the plugs have only 50k, you should be able to clean them and reuse providing they are the correct plugs.

Don't replace just one plug, IMHO.
The spark plug was snug, not really loose per say. whats the spark tube seal?

Edit--
I found what the tube seal is. I believe it came from the plug not being tight because the coil is completely cracked from heat. The Gunk feels like tar and seems to have come from the spark plug itself when looking down the tube. I should have taken pictures while I was in there..

Ok. Just try pulling all the plugs and give them a good cleaning and see how it does once you get the new coils in.

Post #5 has the pages from of the FSM, that give proper testing for spark plugs and how to clean.

Installed new plugs in my 1998 LC. 140,000 miles. Truck was running fine, I installed new plugs as part of my baselining. The plugs that I removed were SK20R11. All looked the same and were in good condition. I assume they are the original plugs.
Coils and rubber boots on the coils all looked to be in excellent condition. No cracks or discoloration. When I removed the old plugs I used my torque wrench. Started at a low setting and kept increasing the setting until the plugs broke free. The lowest torque to break loose was 4.0 ft lbs on number 7. The highest torque was 9.3 ft lbs on number 8.
Installed the new plugs dry and torqued to 13 ft lbs. I rechecked the torque several times on each plug. A couple of the new plugs did tighten a bit more when I rechecked them. I plan to recheck the torque on the new plugs after I drive for a few thousand miles and will report what I find.

Very glad I read this thread. I started hearing a tick that sounded like an exhaust leak the other day. I just thought my header cracked or something and was just going to ignore it. Sure enough, 3 of my spark plugs were definitely loose and the rest of them were way low on torque. 2001LC was right on the money in post #6 on the first page about discoloration of the coil boot. The 3 loosest plugs of mine all had brown boots with lots of carbon, the rest were grey and soft. The idle is now quiet and the tick is gone.

After reading through this thread, I'm wondering if a couple of my plugs are coming loose. We haven't even put 1k miles on the clock since purchase in late August and there has been an increasing ticket sound, when there hadn't been any. Definitely going to double check the plugs to see if they are backing out. Always impressed with the info on this forum...

Yeah, I always thought the ticking noise was the exhaust manifold, after reading this thread, I'm going to check all my spark plugs.

Other than those recommend by the Factory in the FSM and OM (see post #5 first picture). I'm interested in trying the Denso Iridium TT Spark Plug IK20TT. They claim less power use which means cooler running coil.

In fact I've got a set sitting in mu JEGS cart now, they've a sale going on.

Last year, between Advance Auto coupons & discounts along with Denso rebates, I got paid to buy a set. SWEET!

I'm going to pop some of these in at 75k(another 3k to go). It will be interesting to see how they do...

Interesting: I just heard from "JEGS" that the Denso PN # for the TT spark plugs is being discontinued by Denso.

This implies a change in the TT's plug itself or Denso discontinuing it for some reason. Makes me a little uneasy in ordering today without more info!

Hmm. That raises a bit of concern. I wonder if it's a lack of sales or bad product?

I had my number 5 coil go bad, and within a month it went bad again. Threw codes for plug and coil.

Took the coil out and the plug was loose (as in already back out a bit, zero effort to unscrew). Put in a new plug and used the same coil and all is good for now no more codes.

Good thread this seems to be a thing, at least in my case.

Any suggestions on how to get the rear ones out, especially on the driver’s side? Besides mine being nice and stuck, I tried all manner of extensions and sockets but couldn’t get the right clearance with the brake lines and other stuff surrounding that plug.
