Old timers disease..

I wheeled the Tundra out of the drive at 0600 sharp today. Was standing on the Hill at 0820. CB rolled in at 0830.
Unloaded scaffolding and another piece of barn wood he found hiding in his stash pile. Scaffold is for a project in the “big room”. It’s 14’ to the ceiling.

I’m revising my estimate of the chestnut barn lumber. Conservative SWAG, the donating tree was probably 50-60 or 70 years old when harvested pre 1904. Very possible that it was a young tree during the American Civil War… or earlier.

Anyway, worked about 4 hours. All the nailers are in. Carefully and cautiously avoiding any “sensitive” areas/nail plates.

Making the best of the limited board feet. The long wall is up (8’) and we finished the sections under the window.
In between the hand plane and a Japanese hand saw we were able to get a nice fit. Still very rustic in a kind of outdoor two hole-r kind of way…

I stuck around and finished mowing, cleaned up and pulled off the Hill at about 1300. I was a good forty miles down the highway when I realized my phone and Bluetooth speaker were sitting on the mantle.

Old timers syndrome took its toll today.

I was without a phone for a few days. Top ten best week of my life…Unfortunately I found it.

The trouble with tribbles…

Today OCB and I set up scaffolding in prep installing the ceiling fan/center beam (faux). Had some unfinished wiring from circa 20??…That’s where the tribbles stepped in.

There’s an errant 12/2 wire that I can’t recall with 100% certainty or “REMEMBER” why it’s hanging there out side the junction box. I had pictures of that wall Pre-T/G paneling but, that was one lost phone and one crashed laptop ago. I’m 99% certain I recall but, calling in the old geezer retired electrician to remap and relabel everything on that particular circuit. Should be on the ground Wednesday/Thursday. I think it was for a light that was originally going to go up near the peak.

And…While he’s in there, probably going to add a couple outdoor receptacles on the front porch. Outdoor light?

Also, took some preliminary measurements for the porch roof.

I have come so close to buying a few bucks of scaffolding to just have when needed. Somehow I always managed a way around needing it but I'm pretty sure if I had it on hand I would use it enough to justify the modest cost.

It works well to hang meat strips over smoke to make billatong

I just bought this set used. It’s well worn but functional. It came with everything you see in the photos and included two sets of wheels that look like they were on the original Flintstone mobil.

We started with a borrowed set early on and frankly IMHO they were Indispensable for setting trusses, the roofing phase and the ceiling work. Also made a very handy platform for storing tools when floor space was at a premium.

The walk board is nice feature also.

My kingdom for a wire.

Another Jr High/High School friend coming through in the clutch. OCB and EB (Electrical Buddy) on the hill this AM.

I think I mentioned early on that a childhood experience with a buzzing fence and an impromptu bathroom break, set me on the avoidance path to any and all things electrical. Then a 1970 MGB and the Lucas wiring harness sealed my resolve. I’m certain that the Lucas harness was designed by Satan himself IOT beguile and bedevil the lives of mortal men.

Anyway, all that aside, the two halves now have connectivity. My errant wire is tagged, mapped and functioning as it should. . Wired for a generator, tested and logged. Function check is a go. I’m probably going to run everything this fall with a generator and set a mark on the wall for early spring to plug into the grid.

Back on the chain gang today.

We stretched the barn wood to the last possible inch. Ended up with good coverage by using left overs and end pieces. It’s pieced together with pine, chestnut, cedar, pine oak, white oak and a little bit of poplar. I couldn’t bring myself discard any of the material and tried to use every bit of scrape. There is some variation of thickness (part of the charm) and width above the trim piece. IMHO it works for that old man cabin in the woods theme.

1st coat of urethane really brought out the grain and character of the wood. I’ll post up additional pics later.

Scratch one saw blade, fell victim to a square cut nail.

Putting the bath on hold tomorrow IOT try and finish up the beam/fan in the main room.

For sure…As soon as I have room to maneuver it’s chemical warfare time.

We have the general crawling/flying garden variety of insects and Mamalian terrestrial tetrapods. Ants seem to be the dominant species so far with spiders, moths and the occasional mouse rounding out the usual suspects.

Fall seems to be the time when things start looking for a place to winter.

Any termites in your neck of the woods?

Short day today.

Bathroom now has three solid coats of urethane. Letting it dry for a few days before applying the final coat(s)?

Snapped a couple of pics to show the ceiling tie in.

Window treatment installed.

Vanity will sit in the far right corner with shelving directly opposite of the sink (coming soon).

Decided to hold off on the beam/fan today IOT run wire for an outside receptacle on the east wall. Adding a receptacle to the front porch as well.

Also I had one last wire to run in the utility room. Still have one cutout to do in the bathroom for the last can light.

I’m back in the mountains for a few days so OCB will be at the helm.

I’m in the mountains forwarding dispatches.

Beam (faux) is going up. I could have just ran the 1x to the peak and called it good. Went form over function with a cedar man made center piece. Early talk about staining it walnut pre-install. Decided to hang it natural and step back to evaluate. I can leave the scaffold in place if I decide to stain it in place.

I’m not on the ground so it’s hard for me to speculate. TBD

Shifting gears soon IOT take advantage of the last days of August and the early days of fall. Adding a shed roof to the front porch, facia/soffit and maybe a deck for the west wall that will tie into the front porch.

Little cabin staining op is past due. May try and do both cabins as a mater of opportunity.

It appears to be the same material as the ceiling decking and, therefore, I would go with it au naturel. Looks good. If it was a different grain, etc. then I could see going with a bold contrasting stain. Of course I'm not on the ground either.

The OG ceiling is #1 white pine that is aging toward a toasty gold patina. The “beam” cap is cedar. I’m leaning heavily toward a natural look. It will simply blend without pulling your eye toward the ceiling.

I’m using the same ceiling fan that I used in the addition. My untrained eye thinks It will sit better against the the raw cedar without a walnut racing stripe.

Stepping in the high cotton today.

I went kicking and screaming into the modern era this AM. It’s currently not for using, it’s just for looking at . I won’t retire the “space throne” or the privy tent just yet. Keeping them around for one last season, then they’ll pass into hunting camp legend.

I did mark the solemn occasion with a bowed head and a silent prayer to my maker. Didn’t think I’d live to see the day. Just wish my Grandmother was here to see it. I know she’d be proud.

With the addition of the new throne, I felt it imperative to add the exhaust fan. Seemed like the prudent thing to do.

One LED over the shower, one additional light over the sink and one over what will soon be open shelving (or not ) directly opposite of the sink area. There’s a 24x24 window (east facing) just above my “office chair” that lets in the early sun. Essential for my morning time on MUD.

Rapidly becoming my favorite room…

CB’s center piece all dolled up and sporting a top mount sink with requisite farm house/cabin faucet. We’re about a 90% solution in the bathroom. 1/2 day or so remaining to button it up. At a decision point on shelving vice cabinets for bathroom storage. Maybe a combo?

Thursday is electrical wrap up day, ceiling fan, outlet/switch covers etc etc. I’ll swap out the receptacle in the bathroom for a GFCI then.
