CENTRAL — Clemson football player DeAndre McDaniel was arrested Saturday and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature following an argument with his girlfriend, a police report stated.
According to an incident report from the Central Police Department, McDaniel’s girlfriend said she was choked, hit in the head, face and chest and shoved down a flight of stairs by McDaniel at his University Village apartment.
The woman, whose name was not released, was treated at Oconee Memorial Hospital for a neck sprain and bruises to the face and chest.
McDaniel was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond. The charge is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
McDaniel, a Tallahassee, Fla., native who moved from safety to linebacker during spring practice, played in all 13 of the Tigers’ games last season, making 33 tackles and two interceptions. He will be a sophomore next season.
In a statement, Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said: “We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering the facts.”
In a conversation with alumni earlier this month, Bowden made reference to his program’s lack of disciplinary issues during his 10 years in charge.
“Discipline has been pretty dadgum good around here for the last 10 years,” Bowden said last week before leaving town for vacation. “It goes in cycles. For me to throw stones at what has happened to coach (Steve) Spurrier, it’s going to happen here. It goes in cycles. It does not happen very long, it does not happen very often, and it does not happen as consistently.”
