Be careful of the bottom of the tank. I have one that has some rust on the bottom like yours, and after cleaning the rust off it had a pin hole. Also if you need a fuel cap I have some extras.
I do need a fuel cap. How much?

I stopped in a pawn shop yesterday and saw a Coleman lantern by the door. It was sitting on top of a Action Packer and when I opened it up, it was filled with Coleman Stoves and lanterns.

Here's what I got for $25. I'm not showing the Gaz lanterns that were in the box as well.

So I finally have something to post here. Rummaging through my parents basement this weekend netted me this NIB item. My dad says he was issued this when he was stationed in Germany in the early 60's so that family at the house would have light in the event of SHTF. The only thing wrong with that is the 1975 date on the bottom of the lantern. He was stationed there again in 1976 so maybe he's just mistaken of the decade.

Anybody know which Coleman model this would be on the civilian market? Is there any value to keeping it unused?

I don't believe there's a civilian version. It's known as the 252, or the Mil-Spec, by those in the know.

There's always extra value in something NIB, but it's not like you'll be able to retire off of it. IMO, I'd use it unless you plan to sell it now. It's got a cool family story so you might as well keep it. And if you keep it, you might as well use it ;-)

Nice-an unfired Military. There is no civilian equivalent. It was a military compromise during WW2. Coleman hard parts with a British burner. There are even cool variations as production ramped up for the war. They work well, generally, and are very fuel efficient. They are a bit finicky to light but they run well once going. You can't clean the generator, but they are made with a disposable generator so it's cool. Easy to get those generators even now. I did a timed run test on one of mine and I think it went almost 12 hours on 1 tank of fuel. They are built to run at low pressure unlike normal lanterns that run at higher pressure.

The best part of the Military lanterns is the parts well. I wish all lanterns had that.

The Military lanterns were made by several manufactures, and the true Coleman ones are supposed to be the best, and the SMP(State Metal Products (Ky prison sytem)) ones the worst. Who knows. That's still a great lantern, and since it's a family item, it's priceless. I'd keep it and likely run it if you have an occasion.

If you want to keep it "unfired" for the "value" sell it now. Coleman made MILLIONS of lanterns, and so they are interesting and cool, they will never be "valuable" in a real sense.

I have a normal unfired Civilian Coleman with a case I'd trade for that, but I recommend you keep it since it belonged to your parents. I'd also buy it outright if you wanted to sell, just because it's cool. But I'd run it for sure.

@JohnVee

Now that's a really cool score! I'd keep it but if you were going to sell it Drew would surely give it a caring home!

How many times have we looked back on products we didn't buy when they were cheap (used) because they made millions of them? But I'm not arguing with you on this one, just been digging into some rifle research last few days and that thought is fresh on my mind.

I plan to keep it and will most likely fire it up this next weekend. Hell, I'm the guy who once bought a custom $8,XXX guitar and took it to a s***ty club gig the next night. In a cheap padded bag. Because it was meant to be played. This is just an old lantern. There's a limit for some things, but not tools, AFAIC.

yup, milspec. my dad still hasn't handed me down gramps old lantern...
