Amazing

Funny, I don't even think Luke reads this s***.

He just keeps making killer bumpers and blocks out all else around him.

You can almost see the gears turning in that head...

I can take a photo from the inside; I’ll even take one looking through the rear view mirror for you. I assume that you are looking for obstructed view. It’s is not bad at all, I only have a 33inch tire so it still leaves some room. I have to take the pic later because right now they are not mounted and I need to finish up another project that I am working on the truck right now.

Yea, i was kind of wondering why the gas cans are up so high which obstruct the window a good bit. I'll be interested to see the pics.

Still, that's just being picky. :bang:

You have to get them up high for doing ledges.

wow.... I was skeptical of the title - but I can't debate the validity. I still like mine @ 1/15th the cost, but it's not that nicely done - and I still don't have swingouts yet. My rear winch is off to the side, which is fine for the little winch I'm running, I think it would be harder to do a big winch on the side.

v. nice

That is killer for anybody who wants a rear winch, which I think is really more of a safety feature than a front mounted winch. I'm not sure how you'd improve on it.

Now, my rear winch remains your front winch :grinpimp:, but for an expedition setup where you are traveling alone, that setup, or one like it, would seem to be a near requirement.

There is nothing like working directly with a good fabricator to build exactly what you want.

i'm not normally a fan of rear winches- too much bulk. But this setup doesn't look like it takes any extra room. Great work.

Where do you run the wiring? Have you thought about locating another battery somewhere in the rear? Might give a lot more oomph to the winch.

partial hijack: There's a guy in England who builds up defenders and calls them an Ibex. He puts a winch under the center of the truck, then runs a block in the rear and a hook in the front--- w/ winch cable threaded through the frame rail. I've always thought that looked like a great setup instead of winch on front and rear. Saves 80lbs (1 winch vs. 2) and puts the weight in the center instead of in front of the springs.

Ok, hijack over.

Or better yet, who was wearing the highway tires to the left, and why is he stuck and winching from that spot :flipoff2:?

Sorry, there was too much oh and ah on this thread

That is a patented "Foers" winch system and quite ingenious. I think that system would would on an 80 and could work with the rear mounted winch.

The one thing you don't get that way though is any redundancy. If you have front and rear winches, if one craps out, you have a backup - though I wouldn't want to be switching them on the trail.

The second thing you don't get is the ability to use one winch to keep you from sliding sideways down a hill, while the other pulls you forward. Sometimes being able to pull the rear sideways out of a rut, or at least enough up on the the edge of the rut to keep you un-hung up is valuable.

Not to quibble, but the Foers system will do this and much, much more. In fact, one of the neatest features is that you can set your rig up to be like a tram where it not only keeps you from sliding sideways but you can drive your rig along the "tram line" with relatively simple rigging. There is a post that I made in the "recovery gear" section with diagrams of the various ways to rig the system. Amazing flexibility.

I could see an 8K winch mounted off the crossmember running synthetic, would cost me 70 lbs right at the suspension location. I have a really wide hawse :D

This is the $1K solution including the winch :D

MMMM Bumper Porn! I'm very tempted...thanks for sharing your ideas and the build.
cheers,

:hijack:

are you going to put a swingout tire on your rear bumper?

Nope. A 35x10.5x16 (yes, that is 10.5) SSR fits behind the 3rd row perfectly. It stays pressed between the lower hatch and seats, doesn't touch the glass, and the stock cargo tie downs prevent any rolling side to side, leaving room for tool bags, first aid kit, etc. on each side, with the hi lift residing on the floor between the tire and 3rd row. My spare rear driveshaft will sit on top of the hi-lift.

Same visibility issues (minimal) as a tire carrier. No extra weight, no swing out, wrapped that sucker up in plastic so it doesn't stink. Free. Perfect :D

Pic shows the tire offset, which you could do, but I have it centered now so it will strap down tight.
