I guess I didn’t mention it when I posted the snorkel pics. Way back in this build thread when we were replacing the a-pillars the newer updated version has this weird recess on both sides with x2 mounting nuts welded inside too. I wanted to think/say they were for a snorkel (factory) but being on both sides is confusing, still. I was kind of thinking maybe for a sun visor, like you see on some Aussie Cruisers. But a factory exterior sun visor?? With factory provisions in the pillars?? Never seen that in an EPC and just can’t see that being what they are for.

Anyways, snorkel bolted right to these holes no worries at all. Like perfectly. I was only slightly surprised but pretty stoked it played out that way.

Cheers

I believe there is a cover to go over the unused side. The sun visor doesn't use them. I couldn't find an image online, I can take a photo if you'd like.

My only thought was provision for a snorkel with a different engine configuration, but I haven't seen that either.

RHD vs LHD? That is all I can think of.

That is odd. The only 70 series powerplants I know of currently available worldwide are the VDJ V8 diesel, 1HZ diesel and GR V6 gas. All have the airbox on the RHS (passenger side in US speak) and I have only seen OE snorkels on diesels, and they mount on the RHS a pillar. This was also the case with the previous generation of engines. Really odd

Finally had a minute to chillax and catch up on this thread. Awesome work Ian. I still need to catch up with you on of these days on my 1HD query.

The a-pillar snorkel holes are an oddity. They are in fact present left and right and as @locklaw pointed out, OE snorkels are all RHS. I suspect Toyota engineers may have anticipated a left hand snorkle offering that never came to fruition? Also interest (at least to me :D ) it’s only a troopy thing.

So I wonder, is there any other vehicle in production worldwide that comes with provisions on the a pillar for a factory snorkel?

🤷🏼‍♂️

Those other vehicles get cup holders instead. 😁

I always thought the other side was for the antenna mount/support.

Certainly could be.

This is a newer design too, older Troopies didn’t have this.

Cheers

I believe all Vdj78 antennas go straight up, not up the A-pillar like some 75s (this Troopy originally had the A-pillar antenna) . Since the pillars are from a 78, I'm not sure. Even that E7 rig has a straight antenna but has the mysterious mounts. Maybe it's for some government/ngo/mining accessory. The amount of little nuances the 70-Series had in the past 38 years is wild.

Not to swoop in like a vulture, but, um, have any spare of the roof support trim parts you’re willing to part with? I only need one, color doesn’t matter.

I seem to have lost one, or perhaps never had it. But it seems @TonyP wont be using his anymore. 😬

Happy to pay for the ride and your trouble @SNLC if one is available.

If we don't need them and they didn't get tossed, they're yours.

Working through getting this cavity all cleaned and scraped out.

Last of the rot on this Troopy, it will get repaired with fresh metal.

Please keep these kind of photos coming. This is an area that I need to take care of, and seeing it open is really, really helpful. Eventually planning to do the can opener to pop top, but wanted to take care of all the rust from the drip rail up the side first. Maybe it will be a combination of both, as I can see having the roof off allows alot of access. As always, thanks for the details!

The way it is designed by Toyota it is a dust/dirt collector. Pretty hard to clean out with the roof on it. We are going to fix rust/rot and seal this one up good.

A regular washing of the channel or at least a blow out with air time to time could save the Troopy from roof/gutter rot.

Cheers

Also it is a collector of odd items! This Troopy was an NGO truck. We found a shaving razor, old crusty tooth brush, Latinas phone number, pad lock, pens, tooth picks and more up in this hollow space. 🤣

Cheers
