Mogwai who is in Poway (north San Diego County) does pretty regular desert runs with a few folks. Maybe meet up with him sometime. I'd be happy to join. Ret2 also.

Amazing place. 108 degree heat en route to throwing snow balls later that day at 10k ft elevation. It's a long way up though, you're almost a couple hours each way from pavement depending how far you go. Saw only a few other groups, and that was a busy July 4th weekend. Side trip to Funnel Lake was a blast, especially doing the full loop. A few pics... and if you're going let me know maybe I'll join. There's just so many sweet spots up there, I have a hard time going back to the same place twice given my limited # of trips each year.

Right up my ally. How would an off road trailer do?
 
I think you got it with a trailer. Maybe don't take it on the Funnel Lake loop but you'll get out to the end. Fair warning, there's a steap drop towards the end leading to the site above, there's also a giant rock in the middle, get out and walk it, make sure it's not too rutted and that you can get back up.

Drive spot. You wouldn't want to hike it.

Roughly speaking that campsite was here (edit: about 22 miles from downtown Bishop):
37°09'59.0"N 118°26'35.7"W
37.166395, -118.443248

You could def do some mountain biking but if it were me I'd have someone drive me to the top of one of the local high points and tell them you'll meet them back at camp! Another great spot a bit further north is Laurel Lakes, only a few miles up to an awesome lake.

Oh you gotta go to Coyote flats then, that little trout was from the stream that cuts through the campsite. Nothing big in there (Baker Creek) but so fun. A little Tenkara rod is perfect.

@RET2 actually sent me a very similar pic of the campsite to the one above while we were on our way and we just drove until we found it. Spent three nights out there, just about perfect.
