So, I'm in need of a muffler....what are my options?

Snake eater, wondering how your exhaust system is holding up?
What would you do differently to do it all over again?

It's holding up just fine :)

No leaks since my last fix and if I had to do it all over again with the same budget, I would.

Now, if I had some extra cash laying around, I'd probably spring for an OEM muffler just because I miss the whistle ;)

Thanks. My after market muffler is getting loud. I'm going on my 3rd muffler.
I still think the OEM muffler is the most quiet...

Hey fellas,

Bringing this topic back to top since Snake did such a fantastic job of documenting his install.

For my '96, I was thinking of doing a hybrid exhaust system to take advantage of the factory over the frame rail design by using the http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1993/toyota/land_cruiser/exhaust/muffler.htmlmuffler from a '93 and a tailpipe from a '93 http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1993/toyota/land_cruiser/exhaust/tail_pipe.html

I am in the process of procuring the Y pipe from a '94 and already have the cat and the over the frame rail piece.

The '93 two in-two out cat that I have is shot to hell so I'm going to hollow it out for now and see how I like the exhaust flow out of this system I know that Magnaflow, and probably others, make a two inlet, two outlet cat so that will probably replace the hollowed out cats.

Snake and others, does the Bosal tailpipe also have that squeezed section that goes over the rear cross member, like the oem tailpipe? If so, do you recall being as "squeezed" as the oem pipe? I was hoping that the Bosal unit is relatively round in this area.

Does this sound logical to y'all? I know that I can build my own over the frame rail from scratch but it seems like the factory did a fantastic job of this already. I will need to procure the heat shield that goes over this (over frame)piece from somewhere though. I'll contact Cdan to see if he can still get them.

As of this time, I'm not interested in purchasing EMS's beautiful Y pipe. That is one sexy looking Y pipe but mine is still doing great, even though it's more restrictive than the EMS unit.

I just noticed that Walker also makes a muffler for the '93 and wonder if that's any better than the Bosal. Seems to be the same general dimension as the Bosal muffler: http://www.car-stuff.com/store/toyo...2397064.html?prodSlot=Product+Listings+Page:2

Thanks for the reality check.

The Bosal is flat in this section.

Can't remember what the OEM part looked like or if it's any flatter :hhmm:

I put a borla muffler on mine, nothing more. Sounds like a muscle car... But i do have a v8 on my cruiser. Should sound nice with a v6

Ok, thanks for the info. I see that the space is plenty for a 2.5" round pipe to go over the cross member so I may order the tailpipe and see if I can un squeeze it some how

Snake,

I'm starring at the muffler and that long tail pipe from Bosal that just arrived. How much of a PITA was it to snake that thing up and over the rear cross member? I'm guessing you started from the rear of the 80 and moved it forward, up and over the cross member?

OK, a little update.

A couple weeks ago, I started hearing some leakage every time I passed a building or wall while accelerating.

Turns out the inlet pipe for the muffler split right at the surface almost 3/4 ways around

The tension of the system was still holding it in place and you could barely feel the leak at idle.

Too lazy to setup my tig, I just grabbed the torch and welded as much as I could around it.

Pressure tested with the shop vac and all seems to be fine for the past week :meh:

On mine I went with a flowmaster and dumped the resonator completely. I don't notice any drone, and I seemed to have picked up a little power. My little exhaust shop here in NC did it for about 120 bucks. Yes fellas I watched them remove a brand new flowmaster from the box.

My original equipment muffler finally failed after getting dragged across too many rocks. Thanks largely to this thread, I decided to replace it with a Bosal #BO228-24 from Rock Auto. Like others here, I had the same problem with the way the two brackets were welded to their support arms -- they interfered with the rubber isolation blocks that hold the muffler to the chassis. But it was a simple job to, first, weld a new bead between the brackets and the support arms, and then grind off the original welds. See pictures below.

Overall, the fit and finish of the Bosal seems pretty good. I've still got my original cats and tailpipe, and the new muffler matched up with those perfectly. Besides the brackets, the only other minor issue was gasket between the muffler and my OEM tailpipe. According to the Rock Auto web site, it's different (smaller) than the gasket that goes between the cats and the muffler. But on my 1997, the gasket needs to be the same size as the gasket at the cat end of the muffler (Bosal p/n 256-708). It's an inexpensive part, so you might do well to just order an extra when you buy your muffler if you have any doubt as the the correct size.

Snake...how is your exhaust holding up?

Everything's holding up fine except for the muffler :hhmm:

The pipe leading into the face of the muffler cracked at the base and I had to drop a few welds over the last few months

I plan on pulling it and either welding in a flange plate to seal it up or just replace it depending on how bad it is :meh:

Keep in mind, I've put about 100k miles on it since the install, so it's probably due time.

Advice to all with Bosal setup....

Install the extra gasket that Snakeatter did between the two cats.

I didn't and have extra noise...it's annoying....I am just not annoyed enough yes to rip it apart and add the gasket!

Sent with my sausage fingers on phone

OK, another little update.

Decided to replace the muffler with another Bosal unit (all I can afford)

Ordered from Rock Auto again along with 4 gaskets (just in case I needed to double up)

Muffler showed up yesterday, but the gaskets didn't show up until today :meh:

Once again, Bosal f'd up the mounting plates :bang:

Only this time, instead of just adding too much weld, they welded the hanger sideways, so there was no way to possibly bolt up the factory insulators

Luckily, I did the install at my shop where I was able to slice each plate off, heat and twist the hangers, then tig weld them back in place, but if I were doing it in my driveway, I'd be cussing up a storm right now :censor:

Apart from that, the flanges bolted up perfectly and I didn't need to double up on the gaskets, but I did smother them with muffler paste just to be safe :meh:

Snake...nice write-up. What ended up being the mileage and time duration you got from the Bosal you removed?
