@erymer i havent been since ~96 but i bet hobby park in clemmons still has the airfeild and dirt track. Close and fun. Lots of jumps, grandstand for operators, and electric for charging. Never ran it, was always on the mtn bike in those days.

But by all means bust out that tractor seekng as you have a perfectly good excuse ;)
Cool deal. I'll check it out. One of the guys at Anderson was telling about a few events and a track down in trinity as well

I wanted to make you guys aware that there are RC events at Uwharrie. Several are planned this year. For those of you looking to get into the hobby, this looks like a great way to learn and have fun. I know at least one of the events last year was a weekend camping /RC wheeling affair at the Group Camp (think of a 10th scale Logan's Run). Nathan and I plan to get more involved and make some of these dates this year. Here's the 2017 schedule provided to me by @little_joe.

4/29-30: GCM Adventure Series Uwharrie
6/10: Uwharrie #tinytrucks Challenge at Big Creek Rocks
9/23-24: GCM Adventure Series Uwharrie
11/18: Uwharrie #tinytrucks Challenge at Big Creek Rocks

Here is a video from one of the events last year at UORTC:

GCM Racing sponsors these tiny truck events all over the US and Canada. They are an RC parts retailer. Here's a link to their website: GCM USA Webstore - About Us

Some of these guys are just too good at what the can do. Incredible paint work here. Just needs to ditch the rover tire on hood.

Kind of itching to build a scaler. Sure they arent as capable but just like 1:1 it makes it more interesting and highlights driver skills.

Wonder if this is a @bjowett rig? Just as cool as his full size work.

Wow Jason. that's pretty amazing. would love to know who painted the body. I have an idea for the bug body and that is similar to what I want to do.

I can provide updates on the URE events as I get them. A good local friend is the organizer, I talk to him a few times a week, and I intend to help out at all events this year. So if you want, I can periodically update this thread; or is that spammy?

FYI the GCM events really cater to the scale crowd. Don't expect to see many/any 2.2 rigs, or crazy crawlers. Rather, expect a lot of hard bodies, 1.5 and 1.9 wheels/tires, and tons of amazing detail work. The trail rides they do are just that - not crawling courses, but more akin to fun runs with modest challenges. Prizes are awarded based on voting, scale details + fun run results.

The Big Creek events will likely be more pure crawling, with 1.9 and 2.2 rigs.

Last year's event, in spite of a hurricane, drew +50 drivers and several other sponsors. By all accounts, it exceeded all expectations, so I would expect this year's events to be even better (assuming no hurricanes). And I can say in complete transparency GCM and David are not setting the price to fund their retirement, but rather to provide a full experience (camping, one or more meals, shirts, other amenities) and break even or make just a few bucks.

@jfz80 the new rage is the Killerbodies 70-Series hard body. I got one and hope to have it ready prior to the first GCM event: coils up front, leafs in the rear, Yota axles, the whole deal. :)

Any pics of the build Joe? Sounds pretty slick. Checke on those bodies and looks like they are out of stock till March unless someone finds them elsewhere.

Eric, none yet - my donor vehicle/chassis arrives this week, then I'll get started in earnest.

My goal is to make it as scale as possible: I am doing coils + radius arms up front (I'll be making the parts myself), spring-under leafs in the rear. I'm using an RC4WD 2-speed transmission and want to see about mating the transfer case directly to it; and I'll need to make a custom transfer case mount. I've settled on tires, they will be 3.3"x1" so equivalent to a 33x10r15; just not yet settled on which 1.55" wheels.

Once I get the chassis sorted, I plan to make an interior; and ultimately a scale 4.5L turbodiesel V8 as in the current 70 to cover the 540 motor. :)

I can see the trend now.....Selling fully built 80 series, or selling ARB bumper with winch, to fund new scale RC Truck.

When one of you gets busted for shoplifting the scale display tents at Target, we will know it has gone too far.

Tempura powder paints in denatured alcohol are awesome for weathering to achieve rust, dirt, grime, dust, etc. Unless sealed, they will wash off. There are also "rust" kits that will achieve the textured rust.

heat gun/hair dryer, and crumpled aluminum foil will help create realistic dents and creases, along with dremels and wire wheels (for those 40 and 60 series owners).

Model railroading forums are the best for rust techniques. that and scale modeling for armor

good idea. been youtubing the process a bit. I think the bug body is gonna get the Dung beetle effect.

It begins. Tires are for mock-up only, by scale they are 40's (I have some scale-equivalent 33's on the way). This is the Killerbody LC70, RC4WD TF2 LWB chassis. I need to start working on the front coil/radius arm suspension; modifying the transfer case to mount direct to the 2-speed transmission; and a s***ton of other things.
