You would cut the gate...and then just push the shift lever to the passenger side, not pulling it rearward. That would give you 2WD low.

Could you tell me what kit you bought from AA , I have a 76 FJ40 with stock 4 speed and stock transfer case , i cant seem to figure out what kit i need

Thanks Robb

Call AA and they will tell you which kit you will need. I believe they all cost the same, just have a few minor parts differences.

Good advice, they are very helpful over there.

Even if you get the exact kit it takes a bit of fussing to get things to work smoothly and consistantly. You need to be patient.

I love using 2 lo. on and off trailer, or just when you need lo for a few yards then back into hi range for some baja runnin.

Stock fing birfs will fail....this will not prevent that...keeping the truck on pavement and not using the front axle is about the only thing that will prevent the fing birf from failing. :)

This mod can be done to your shift gate/bracket as well.

in my own defense i did say AS MUCH i know they will break but it would help prolong theyre life esp. with a locker up front.

but now that i know it can be done it will be!

wow thats like the best acting ive ever seen!
yea me too
look he got in.

exactly what i did to mine, my shifter is tighter than before when i was using the plate ,it used to vibrate and rattle all the time ,now with a few washers on there it is smooth and rattle free .

got a pic of where u are talking about?

Just out of curiosity, what would the effective shift pattern be? I'm having trouble visualizing this right now. I've never had a twin stick setup. I might do this tonight.

Imagine a square shift pattern.

You can travel along any of the sides of the box but not across the center.

Fyi, my cruiser came without the shift gate back in '92 when I got it. Took a couple times of 2low stucks on the trail before I figured out what was going on. I never did see the twin stick idea as a bonus cause it just seemed to clutter up the floor and I already had the 2low capability with one stick.
One stick is simpler, less parts, and it is already installed.

PS This obviously doesn't apply to the older vacuum cruisers or the dash shift ones like the 1970 fj40 I had. It does apply to my '74 cruiser though.

Which is fine for a stock trans and tcase combo, but if you were to change drive train, V8/auto trans, etc, you will find that trying to keep the stock shift lever configuration to manipulate the transfer case may prove to be a more problematic than fabricating or purchasing a twin stick set up.

Actually, it was NOT possible even on the older vacuum-actuated front drives. There was a mechanism on the hi-n-lo lever that automatically actuated the front drive when you moved from hi to lo.

I must have an odd case then. Or perhaps failed/modified linkage mechanism. I routinely run 2 low with front hubs locked on tight trails. No driveshaft binding in tight turns and no tire slippage, indicating front axle is not engaged. I only engage the front axle when needed for traction.

I run a sm465/np205 and all I had to do was notch the shifter linkage plate so I have 2low. Still have 1 stick like when I had a stock Tcase.

Thanks, man. I've got it. I have a x-fer shift knob off a Nissan King Cab on there right now (), which is straight back to 4LO, hence my trouble visualizing. I did the mod today. It took about 5 minutes with a sprained wrist.

i was talking about the gate .my shifter was always rattling .to mod mine ,i just completely removed the gate . once i took it off the shifter was really loose, shoulder on the bolt so as to not over tighten it ,.so i had to add some washers on the end of the shaft .to stop the rattle . i just put an extra washer on to hold it a little tighter and greased it it up .shifter shifts smooth .and no rattling :grinpimp:crappy pic . this is a pic of an sm465 with a 4sp. linkage .threaded into a piece of flat stock bolted to the side of the 465 on a 3sp.t-case .,can see the fat washer on the end .just sandwiched it a bit tighter ..
can see washer and no gate ,hope this makes sense
.

twin stick

when i run out of stuff to buy for my cruiser I will need the twin stick mod--got a ways to go yet though

I am new to the twin stick idea but am about to put the cover back on my transfer case so it's a good time to ask this question. I like the idea of 2WD low so I shouldn't have any trouble if I just remove the shifter plate?

Yeah, I know it's an ancient thread, but does this mod work with a split case too?

Dedtruk...Im looking for answer to this question too. I have the tub off the frame now and therefore never as accessible as now.

Remove the gate, add washers to fill the gap,...DONE!

Best

there was an article in pv4 magazine back in 74 0r 75 on how to do this ,its not a new idea to some of us older guys and gals.but it never hurts to get the word out.

The plate you speak of, is it bolted inside the boot to the tranny tunnel?

If so mine was long gone when my 40 was acquired.
