Twin-stick is the gateway to triple-stick...

The plate you speak of, is it bolted inside the boot to the tranny tunnel?

If so mine was long gone when my 40 was acquired.

No. The top of the gate plate is bolted to the transmission via the top cover. The bottom is anchored to the pivot pin that the shift lever pivots on from the side of the transmission.

Best

here is a photo that shows the gate installed, it's a little hard to see it black-on-black but it is in the lower right quadrant of the photo:

1911, Thanks! your picture brings it all together. My plate was apparently already removed when I got my 40. Had no idea that I could shift into 2 Low.

Still, I'm contemplating the twin stick...

What a great thread! I have some linkage issues of my own that maybe you guys can help out with. My rig is a '72 FJ40 w/SBC and SM465 trans on a stock TC. I have what I believe to be an AA mounting plate for my TC shifter and linkage, but something is amiss...

Problem #1: The 2/4 shift arm does not engage the notch in the TC shaft. I was thinking about fabricating an adapter or extension of some sort so I don't have to crawl under the truck and pull it our by hand. Another option would be to heat and hammer the arm into position, but I'm not too keen on that.

Problem #2: After I get problem #1 solved, I cannot get enough throw on the shifter to pull the shift shaft out enough to engage 4WD. If you look at the top of the pic, the shifter hits the opening in the tunnel where the boot goes. Possible fixes are to hog out the hole or heat and bend the shifter to reposition it in the opening. Thoughts?

Problem #3: There is major slop in my Hi/Low linkage. I don't think I'm getting enough lateral throw to engage the low side. My proposed fix is to add washers or a ground down spacer to provide a pivot for the linkage (red circle in pic).

Do these sound like reasonable fixes or is there a better solution?
