SAS attendee, first year: brings a replacement part for every component of the vehicle, state of the art GMSR and subscriptions to GAIA and OnX.

Second year: tops off tank in Ridgeway because it’s .25¢ cheaper per gallon, packs enough underwear… probably.

I'll meet you in Ouray for ice cream to help reduce the stress. I can show you where we used to enter the Beaumont Hotel when we were kids while it was boarded up. There is plenty to do in town to ease the nerves.
Also, weed is legal in CO.

I hit one of your 2nd year criteria for my first year. What is GMSR and GAIA? Replacement parts? I would have to make something from available resources.

Fancy map app

Those fancy electronic map apps will get you in a sketchy situation if you have no experience. I'll trust a paper map all day vs. something that requires power.
Common sense is not so common.

That is a good question about coms, and maps

Buy a cheap GMRS handheld radio. It’s got appx 20 channels. Trail leader will let you know which one to be on. They’re super simple and inexpensive. Plenty of people bring loaners too.

As far as maps there no substitution for a paper map and the ability to read it.
That being said I like to use both and prefer onX Offroad super nice to pin point your location and or check your location on the move at a quick glance.
You can also map your route before leaving Dbl check buy paper map that the route is correct.
Bottom line is for SAS your trail leader will most likely know the route by heart 😍

This is a super CHILL event, first timers don't STRESS !!

Only thing I can comment on from a first timer a couple years ago is almost too relaxed lol

Looking into a trail run...oh go talk to Bob down there in the hat and check if they have room. Ok who's that and everyone has a hat on??
Lol but all good

Don’t talk to Bob.

I like, and have nothing against, gearing up and being prepared. I explored those mountains for several years with nothing fancier than a 4x4 Tundra and a sense of adventure (and I believe a drop of common sense).

- As for comms, what Jim said is where I am at, a couple GMRS handhelds. I'll probably add an antennae this year though, wouldn't mind a bit more range.
- OnX and GAIA are both good, but COTREX is the bomb up there in my opinion. Definitely my recco...
