Rust consult - Is this BJ42 too far gone?

Add at least 30% overage for budget slippage— and that’s just for the issues you know about— my two cents

If your a Land Cruiser junky like me $4500 may be possible. You don't have your own personal junk yard of parts don't think your even close. My 82 tub the cowl is close to $800 cowl piece. By the time I sold the trailer the tub and frame came on for scrap metal I was already money ahead. At one time I would say it would nickel and dime you to death. Now it's hundred and thousand.

Do I see mig weld between the floor and the rocker panel above the exhaust heat shield? I certainly don't see factory spot welds - it is probably a bondo sculpture. I'd expect that the frame likely needs attention if this is the case.

The cowl was 800? Where does the rest of the cost come from (3700)

A magnet across the body would reveal bondo— panels look straight but that may not tell whole story.

the body is straight up shot. Unless you are are an accomplished body worker with LOTS of free time.... pass.
The only way to make that work would be if the mechanicals were better than average and you pulled the tub off completely and went with an Aqualu or T7 tub and built it up from there.

Really? To me it looked like the a pillar rust (potential issue), hood, sides, and cowl were the only issues. I know that’s quite a bit, but having a solid tub, doors, fenders, fiberglass top and quarter panels seemes better than shot, no?

Im thinking this will be one of my only chances at a bj42 for a decent price in the states. I know there are a few on here in Canada for 15-20k, but at $6k, you guys don’t think I could get it in good shape for 14k more?

Btw: thanks for all of the input from everyone. I appreciate immensely

Are you saying $3,700 more for just the cowl or all the body work? Believe new tub from Columbia cost around $7,000. That doesn't include a top or doors and are know to have problems fitting a hard top. Rust is like a iceberg, for all the rust you see they is more you can't see.

Just the cowl body work. I’m thinking the cowl grafting should be done by a professional. I feel comfortable doing the rest of the aesthetic body work.

If that replacement cowl is from PACOL, it'll likely be 1" wider than the truck. Been there, done that. I agree with the $3500-4K range for that truck. Sadly, it has rusted in the hardest-to-repair areas, and no so much in the more common, flatter areas.

At $6k or 7.5?
Either. I agree with the $3500-$4000 range. The way that the rust is makes me wonder if the truck has had major rust repair in the past and now it is resurfacing in the places that weren’t repaired.

At $6k or 7.5?

Time to keep looking. It’s likely the only reason that truck still resembles a 40 is that it hasn’t been driven lately. Take it on some bumpy roads and the entire truck will start to fall apart.

Take the advice given here and keep on walking unless you can buy it for $1-2k

Can anyone add input here? According to the seller, it has had no body work done.

Is this not a repair? It appears like the back side of a butt-joint.

My '75 is covered with spot welds, on the rear quarters and hard top sides they really stand out, but it has to be the right light. Your images look too smooth.

Based on what I have read, OP is intent on buying it and my guess is he hasn’t found and won’t find much affirmation on this thread for that decision at that price. I look forward to the build thread (and I don’t mean that facetiously).
