Theoretically, one could've drained the tranny thinking it was the oilpan. Then poured 8 quarts in the engine to replace it.
That’s my assumption, but this forum (and life) have taught me not to assume anymore…..

Everyone else has addressed the trans fill so I’ll ask a different question…. Why do you think the engine was overfilled? Did you check the dipstick and it was over full? If yes, how did the extra oil get in there?

I ask because if your fuel pump leaks, it will leak into the crankcase and make the oil level high, but it’s actually fuel in with your oil. This thins your oil and makes bad noises happen, followed by worse noises, then adult crying noises.

So, was the oil level overfull? Did it smell like gas? As @bj70bc says, the oil gauge is pressure, not volume. You could have a max reading on the gauge with 1 quart of oil in there.

And lastly, 8 quarts! You said you’re getting more, but if you drained the engine oil and replaced the filter; 8 quarts before you start it.

I recognized it was overfilled when I pulled the dipstick and saw the blackness way above the the high mark.
Sad to say, this is literally the first oil change done on the car since I've owned it.
I've been working on it system by system and now that it's finally ready to be driven around regularly I figured I should change the oil. lol 😝 - sounds dumb but because I drove it so little I just never got around to addressing that.

First it was me solving and redoing much of the electrical system, then it was the braking system, then I sent the carb to be re-done by our main carb guy here on ih8 - Coolerman - , then I solved the vacuum leak at the manifold gasket, then it was the steering column, and then I just took it to a professional to finish off a thorough look over and he gave it back to me and mentioned he didn't do an oil change. So it was my first go to after a couple drives. And I just ran into accidentally pulling the wrong plug in my haste. So yeah that's how I got to this point.

The sliver part on the end is the tcase. You drained the transmission. Yes, you circled the fill plug. Fill it with gl4 till lube comes out.

Awesome thx for verifying. When you guys all say gl4 and I saw you 77mustard40 when you wrote: "high quality GL4 80-90 WT gear oil" ... I'll be going to the store to get 3 more quarts of oil because I only purchased a 5quart-er of castrol for my oil change like a dummy, so I'll be getting the Transmission gear oil as well - I just wanna make sure I'm getting the correct thing and so I'll be headed to Oreilly's or NAPA and I'll just see that on the shelf I'm sure?
Quick google of that brings up these choices - is this what you guys mean by GL4?

So, you never changed the oil and it was overfilled? Did the oil smell like gasoline?
Keep an eye on the oil level going forward.
It sounds like the fuel pump might be bad.

For the sake of completeness, I have highlighted the Transfer case Fill and Drain plugs.
As stated, remove the Fill plug first - it helps with the draining, and ensures you can put oil back in after draining.

A hack for refilling the transmission and transfer case is to buy one of those "Easy Packs" (seen in your photo above), and then buy any other GL4 gear oil by the gallon, which is way cheaper. The Easy Pack makes filling the transmission and transfer case so much faster and easier, because you can squeeze it, cram it into tight spaces, etc. When the Easy Pack is empty, refill it from the gallon jug and repeat until oil runs out of the fill plug.

My son’s Subaru has entered the chat.
We’re running back into parts store to get more of all the fluids 15 minutes to closing because I pulled the wrong plug. Counter guy says “you’re not the first one to do that” so I felt a little better.
Lots on the dipstick, none in the transmission.

My 12 valve had an injector bad enough out at SAS the guys at Rusty Nail Racing said the oil was about half diesel. The only thing that saved it was that it holds 5 gallons of oil.
But my main point is that you could see it happening in the pressure gauge, when the engine was hot it got as low as 8 psi.

ETA Very thankful it never got to bad noises, especially the adult crying noises.

When I first purchased it, I tried to get an appointment at valleyhybrid and I got pushed off for months, then when I checked back I got pushed off for another 4 months, then
I tried Mudrak and got the same thing. I don't even know what's going on down here to be honest. I don't know what kind of transmission it is - just that it's a 5-speed. The previous owner passed away and I was sold the car by his son who was able to tell me absolutely nothing about it. I still to this day would like to know what I have - bec the PO did tons of stuff to it obviously. So I'd still like a real Landcruiser specific mechanic like Georg @ ValleyHybrid or Gary @ Mudrak to look it over and tell me what I've got, but getting an appointment with them has been a job in itself - and has still never happened because I gave up on trying to get an appt with them. I'll try them again, but I'm sure I'll be told they don't have time and that I'll have to wait on a list (contact us back in 4 months tends to be the typical answer I get, and I do wait that time and reach out again just to be told the same thing).

The only reason I mentioned noticing an issue from the gauge was that it never ran hot to my recollection until recently when I added some oil (obviously too much), suddenly looking down at my gauge it wanted to jump up to 3/4 of the way up so I was like hmm better check my oil, upon checking the dipstick I noticed how high it was above the full line and how ugly black and thought damn I'm doing this right now.

Well, two pages and still no glamour shots of your 40. Post up some pics of the cruiser (if for no other reason because we all love 40 pics on this forum) but if you take some photos of the interior and engine bay as well we may be able to help tell you what you have.

Georg and Gary are very busy guys. All you need is a good orientation to your rig. Have you talked to your local club? Have a tech session in your driveway, provide some refreshments.
