That is amazing Nick, good job. To get out losing a small amount like that is really something. Even if I got that, should my truck be wrecked, I don't even want to tell anyone (even myself) how much I'd be out....but good for you for doing so well. :)

I'm sure most of us are very interested in what you buy next. Is it gonna' be Stones truck?

Congratulations, Nick. I think that all of us would agree that you handled this whole thing very well considering the circumstances, and you have been blessed in return. I'm glad it worked out for you...best of luck! It's very encouraging to hear that ICBC is honoring what these JDM's are worth. Approach is sometimes half the battle, and I think you approached them perfectly.

this espec good news in light of the rumours that ICBC was only wiling to pay "auction price" for written off Skylines...
maybe you have helped to set a precedent...

Right now I am looking and thinking at a few trucks.
Stones BJ74 is one of them.
I really like stones truck ($16K), and I like the 5speed.
Pretty much has everything I would want.
I would want to change a few things, but nothing major.

Also two different 81's have been offered to me for a similar price.
Once less ($15K), then Stones truck and one more ($17k).
They both need mechanical or electric work.
However stones truck needs body work (rust).

Not sure what to do....
I would like an 81 agian (could put all my accessories on)
But don't really have the time to work on them.

I would also like a 74, and the 5-speed.
But its smaller, less comfortable and has rust issues unlike the 80 seriers.
If stones bj74 was a little less, I would of already jumped on it.
I don't really want to low ball Stone either.

Not sure what to do.....

We can go with you for a ciber shopping !!!!

Maybe we can.
I am going away for the next 10 days on a canoe trip.
Have some money in the bank now, and one (possibly two offers) on my 80 series. (plain jane - no accessories).

What would you guys do?
Could use some help.

80 series, that needs mechanical or electrical work?
But I could put my accessories on it.

Or a 74 series that kicks some but.
But needs rust addressed.
I would need to cut out the rockers and put new metal in, and also start on the fenders. Frame, axles, driveline has a bit, but it could be taked care of.

What would you guys do for similar pricing?

Hmmmm.....

I'd buy your truck back plus a 91 fj80 in the states for $3-4,000 and do a swap to get me a LHD diesel, and i'd buy an easy to sell and break even $2000 driving around vehicle in the mean time.

i'd probably have enough left over to get an m101 and a decent FJ40 if i had a place to park them

Nick, here's your chance for a LHD diesel '80!
I would love to do this.
I just have the time or space for this.
I don't really want to spend the next 3 months on it.
M is leaving soon, and I would like to spend time with her.

If I started mid-Jan it would be months after that.

Plus as far as shop space goes, I don't think I am Colin's favorite person right now. We have always gotten along, but have never been tight friends. I would not a truck to ruin our friendship. I could see him agreeing for a few weeks, but he would get mad if the project turned into a 2 or 3 month project. He does not mind friends using the shop, but when he needs it, he want to use it. Even if I rented the shop, 3 months is along time. Its not a small suzuki I can shove in the corner. 2 80series trucks would take some good sized space. (plus if the body is off, that is even more space.

I think my best bet, is buy something that needs less work, and drive it.
Then sell my 80 for parts, and I could come out slightly ahead (depening on how much the 80 sells for). Pay all my other debts, and put what ever is left on the cruiser loan. I will still be making payments, but it will me one, more managable payment.

I know I would be better off doing the swap.
But I just can't see it happening for a few years.
And I don't want to sit on my truck that long.

Cheers,
Nick

Nick,

Sorry to hear about your roll glad to hear that you and your girlfriend are ok.

I love my BJ74 and it is a great size for two people and a dog.... I do have a trailer for my camping gear.

However, I found this HZJ77 in Victoria.

Might be something else to take a peak at....

Take care...

I'm glad to hear that ICBC has treated you well. I lived in BC most my life any any dealings I ever had with them were very good too . . .

You must be feeling much better about everything now that you can move on!

If you decide to part your 81 out be sure to drop me a line

The Stone's Cruiser is a pretty nice choice .. but I'm not sure if the right way to you. If was my case I love have a nice LWB rig .. as 80 series. Other as 70 series to nice off roading ..

In my case my Tencha ( 60 ) is my off roader rig ( ) and my 80 series my DD

Alright guys.
I am out of town until the 25th or 26th.

See you guys later.
Keep the thread going if you want.
I might make a new thread when I get back.

While I am gone, I will think about my options and pray about it.
Which diesel cruiser to get?

Cheers,
Nick

there is, or was anyways, an 81 for sale in Richmond at 'maximum overdrive' importers. It appears 'fully loaded' (winch, lockers, snorkel, 35" tires) for 22k, I think the big end bearings were changed also. No idea what those guys are like to deal with, altho I did talk with him awhile back when I was entertaining the idea of a JDM van.

bah..n/m..its not on their webpage anymore.

I think Nick has already said if he buys again, it'll be from Wayne. Unless of course he buys from someone like Stone - his truck looks really, really nice, and it's unlikely that there will be any major surprises. Which means $$$ from my experience. Hmmm. That's actually true of even not so major surprises. Since Nick has already said he wants to downsize / downcost, I'm thinking Stone's is a good option. But not a Prado - the head problems are too frequent. This is going to be a fun debate, especially without Nick, since he's the one buying. :)

Nick,
Glad you made out so well with the insurance company..
I am looking forward to following your search for another cruiser.

Have a great time where ever you are off to..

Cheers

I think you want to think about whether you're still going to go off-road with the truck in the future. Why drop $20K+ on a fully loaded luxury 4x4 only to beat the crap out of it in the bush? Can you afford to risk wrecking your rig if it's your daily-driver?

It's these sorts of questions that have me up at night from time to time.
