Rod, I enjoy watching your progress. Looking great

The spare mount on my '65 is the body color; so is the '66 and late '71 production labeled as a '72

Paul

Up until the early seventies these were body color. I still have the blue one from my 68 I replaced with one out if a junk yard because of a broken bolt. Not 100% sure but the change might have happened with the lighter spare carrier that happened with the 72 model. The FJ25 almost everything was body color. Then things slowely started switching to pewter and black. I know by 68 the rear license plate light was pewter. Not too many years earlier it was body color.

I also remember my 71 being pewter also, the pewter tire carrier on my 66 the color was in good condition maybe it was a replacement ?

Also my 66 I do remember the front turn signals being body color, not pewter like I seen on 68s.

Thanks a ton guys. I thought my 72 (gone now for 20 yrs) had a pweter spare tire mount but thought the 65 might be body color hence the question.

I plan on getting new turn signals and bumperetts. Both will be painted body color.

I can't wait for the swap meet in Stockton... I'm saving my $$$. Last year the one I went to was a real feast of reasonably priced pieces I needed. Hopefully this year they will be the same. The real nice thing is this year I can spend all my $$$ at the first one in April and then have plenty of time to save more $$$ for the one in July.

Current photos

I still have motor mounted to the frame. it's a great place to store it for now.

I put the tub on a Poor mans rotisserie for some body work. Besides having a 1/2" of bondo on one corner the PO drilled over 100 holes. 3 of them were to mount a 3 point Roll bar to the frame. It has the typical rust but I don't think it's too bad for a 65. The 3 holes have been filled and I'm working on the rust now.

Thanks for looking.

Rod

where is this "rotisserie" from?

only thing worse than having holes drilled into your body are holes drilled into the dash....................lame

I built it, hence the "poor mans" part. For the limited work space i have its been a real life saver. Especially when making the rear sill. If I did it again I would make a few small changes but all in all it's great.

Ya I have 2 holes in the dash. One is from an aftermarket cig lighter the other was a push button attached to the ignition switch. Turn the key and push the button to start. Kind of cool but not OE.

part number

Maybe, try it out and let us know.............
Part number 5335960010 was superseded by part number 5335990301.

Well the parts guy said that the second number was valid so I ordered 2 at 5.77 each. We'll see in a few days what I get.

thanks for the info. I still Plan on looking for OE webbing type stuff. some day I'll get around to calling Mark.

looks great. i am subscribing since my jan 66 needs sill work and patches in the wheel wells :D

Hope you work faster than me. I still have some smoothing out to do on the wheel wells but I will get it sooner or later. I spent the day taking the rest of the seat covers off the front seats. I bought the correct OE color and style for my rig from one of the guys here on MUD. I need to do some serious repair on the springs an what not. Maybe the swap meet in stockton will yield a nice set of seat guts.

i have had it three years and have not done anything much yet so i would need a lot of catching up! mine is also originally spring green and a factory soft top. the seat covers are coral underneath.

Finished they'll look like twins!:)

Swap Meet

I went to the PMC swap meet yesterday and picked up a couple of hub caps. They cleaned up pretty good. Now I just have to figure out how to get the dents out. Don't want to ruin them with a bunch of hammer marks. Also a photo to prove that I have been working on my project. Things should settle out a little and maybe I can get some more work done on it. The tail gate and windshield frame are almost done, well until they get some paint.

i used a piece of rawhide stapled down on my bench and some wooden blocks with the ends rounded over approximately the contour of the hubcaps original shape.

for my solid caps, i just cautiously hammered them on the rawhide with a rubber/neoprene hammer

just be careful not to strike too hard or you'll reverse the dent and stretch the metal

the dents on the ridges are tough, your caps look good

Good Idea. I can copy the contour then tap tap tap them slowly into place. The guy gave me a good price on them but they are getting harder and harder to come by (oem) so I need to do it right.

could you try one of those suction dent removers?

could you try one of those suction dent removers?

Thanks for the idea. It would be nice if someone made one strong enough for this. It's pretty tough steel and it has a crease.

Several times over the years I've used a toilet bowl plunger to remove large dents in the side of a vehicle. Works really good if you don't have any creases.

Hub Cap Question

OK so I was looking at the caps I just purchased with the intent of making a tool to pop the dent out when I noticed that it is a two piece cap. Unlike my one piece caps I bought earlier. Can someone tell me when they changed?

The one piece cap has a drain hole and the two piece cap doesn't. I know the one piece cap came off a 66 but I didn't ask what year the two piece came off of.

Sorry couldn't upload a pic, maybe later.

Never heard of a two piece hub cap on a 40 series cruiser. Not sure does the outer lip look more like the later style. I have maybe thirty early hub caps none are two piece. Some are dented, some have rust, others have both but none are two piece hub caps.
