Never heard of a two piece hub cap on a 40 series cruiser. Not sure does the outer lip look more like the later style. I have maybe thirty early hub caps none are two piece. Some are dented, some have rust, others have both but none are two piece hub caps.

For some reason I can't upload a picture right now. I'll keep trying.

pic

The pic. The one on the left came off a 66. The one on the right (?)

Who made my cap?

Ok as suggested I took the two different caps I have and put them side by side and took a picture. In the above post you can see the difference between one being a solid one piece cap and the other being a 2 piece cap. In the pics below you can see a difference in the outer rim as well. The two piece cap has more of an angle to it. It's hard to tell but all 3 ridges are different on the 2 caps. For me the OEM has a nicer smoother look to it.

So did someone actually make these aftermarket, that you could buy from the local auto parts store?

Very interesting...I have no idea.

Could they have been made by Toyota, for two different Toyota vehicle models ?

It's possible I guess. I also noticed that in post 122 you can see a difference in the rim that contacts the hub cap clips. much thinner.

These arn't whimpy light weight caps. They are well made.

WOW

" I have maybe thirty early hub caps none are two piece. Some are dented, some have rust, others have both but none are two piece hub caps."[/QUOTE]

Wow I'm just starting my collection (4 caps total) and I already have something thats unique. A dented, rusty, 2 piece cap from who knows what. Wanna trade for some that arn't.

Actually I'll probably use them when I go off road. I like the looks of the acorn caps but don't want to dent up my Paki ones, oh wait I never got those!

here is a NOS floor board with the correct pattern

Tom, I think that you cut your mats on the wrong angle. The straight edges should be the forward, and outer part of the step...yours looks like you used the inner part of the step as your straight edge guide. Look at the picture in post #42 of this thread, and you'll see what I mean

I know #1 is wrong ( part of the side mirror that should be body color). But what about the rubber spare tire stop. Was it black or some other color and then the latches for the under the seat tool box. Also circled in that pic are the fasteners for the drop down tail gate chains. What color were those?

Just reading thru your thread again I noticed this posts. #2 the latches that hold the driver's seat down should be body color. The special bolts for the tailgate chain were grey steel color. I have black ones but those were off a later cruiser that had black vinyl cover on the chains while the earlier ones were coral color and to be honest I'm not 100% sure the black paint was factory paint. The collar piece for the steering column at the fire wall should be body color. Not sure about the bracket for the hi/lo shifter linkage on the fire wall. Don't remember it being black but it may have been if your firewall was black. I'll try and see if I have a picture of it off my 65 FJ45.

Thanks so much for the info. It's very useful.

I finished sanding the hood last weekend and got a couple of coats of masterseries silver on it. Today I sanded the right fender and have the first coat on the top side. Hopefully monday I will finish it ans then move ob to the left side.

Question?

I have a question about the door strap hardware. What color was it on a 65. Were the shoulder bolts body color, were the I bolts body color, how about the snap end of the strap and finally the piece that is attaached to the strap that the shoulder bolt goes through. If it makes a difference it's an early (March I think) 65.

Thanks, still working on it just nothing to post yet. I put the master series on the fender aprons and the second fender last night so now it's on to the front bib and spare wheel carrier. Weather is turning so I will soon be restricted to the inside of the garage and it's a mess!

Still looking for a big window carb. My son thought he had one scored in florida but it turned out to be a rottenchester :(

No I haven't, not yet any way. I know that when the time is right I'll score one. In the mean time I keep looking for a good deal. My son is in Florida going to flight engineers school so he put a wanted ad on craigs list. Some guy called and said he had one for 25$. Before my son got there the guy called back and said he was mistaked it's a rottenchester. Needing the carb is a ways out so I'm just looking for a good deal before I pay the going price $$$. Thanks for the suggestions I haden't thought about SOR or TLC 4x4. They are now on my list.

Proof I'm still working on it

After my son joined the coast guard and left home qualified help has been hard to come by but I may have a replacement in the making. Not bad for 4 yrs old. He was super excited to use tools and do real work. (I loosened all the screws and bolts the night before)

A coat of master series. I will need to sand the runs and brush marks before spraying with primer but this metal is protected! Every square inch has been sand blasted with a Speedy Blaster and boy does that take time but for now it's all I have for the bigger stuff.

looking good :)

my brother just got out of the coast guard...he was in for 10+ years...navigator on the USCGC STURGEON BAY as well as another ship I can't recall... this was the ship he spent alot of his time: USCG: USCGC STURGEON BAY || WTGB -109 (Bayonne, NJ)

congrats on his service

and congrats on making another son a cruiser head :)

Thanks, my son has been in about 5 years so far and it looks like a career for him. He loves it. He spent the first year and a half on the Midgett out of Seattle. Now he is stationed in Hawaii as a C130 mechanic. He is currently in his last week of flight engineers school in Tampa, if he is successful that will be his new job when we returns to Hawaii. It's amazing the opportunities the CG gives to these young men and women. As for the youngster in the photo, that's my oldest grandson and he loves to do things with Gramps and Gramps loves to do things with him.

That's awesome.

Glad to see you're making steady progress on the build, good luck!

Very cool Rod, on both your son's achievements, and encouraging your grandson :)
