Hey all,

2014 570LX leaking AHC fluid from rusty lines and rusted rear shocks. Reservoir empty.
Not really feeling difference in suspension performance, not especially rough or bouncy or anything.
Outraged by price given to replace lines especially because I don't care about height control. I will at minimum replace the bad shocks. I've got two mechanics CONFIDENTLY telling me AHC fluid is strictly for height control with no or negligible damping effect - that the Lexus shocks & struts have separate internal fluid or mechanisms. Meaning don't worry about the line or lack of AHC fluid, just swap the bad shocks with new OEs and keep it going.
But then my research suggests maybe no, the struts, shocks, and even springs (??) rely on AHC fluid for suspension.
But it's also unclear how Much they rely on it.

So dilemma is (not caring about height control):

1. Maybe suspension without AHC will have roughly normal service life, operate more or less adequately, though perhaps not optimally.

2. Or maybe it'll ruin everything in 12 months, so need to bite bullet now and fix line or delete/convert to conventional.

Need guidance. I don't trust the shop guys or chatgpt.
 
Those mechanics do not know what they're talking about. Avoid. If fluid runs low enough ride will start to suffer and the pump can burn out which will add a lot of cost to repairs.

Swapping to a traditional shock/spring combo can be done very cheaply. But to get it to ride somewhat similarly, $$$. Personal preference on systems for sure. I've deleted and have no regrets. The only thing I miss about AHC is the auto load leveling feature. Others have had different experiences.
 
I went through this a few months ago. My cost was basically the globes and fluid so that's the direction I went. From what you are describing I would find a shop that can advise on fixing or replacing. Lots of good options out there at various price points from about $1,000 - lots more!
 
Those mechanics are confidently full of s***.

Damping control of the fluid moving in and out of the strut is integral to how the AHC system works. That’s why valves external to the strut are clearly labeled as for damping control. Not to mention controlling ride height.. see those dinky little springs under that 6000lb SUV? Only possible because the fluid pressure generated by the pump then plumbed to the strut is applied to the diaphragm and nitrogen spring inside the globes under your rocker panels. The coils are helper springs.. the globes are your primary springs. This is all being held up at present by valves that are closed. Valves that aren’t designed to stay closed without bleeding forever.

Even if you put new struts onto the truck, you’d never get it back off the bump stops without the pump and plumbing being repaired. And with you driving around on an empty reservoir there’s a good chance your pump is smoked.

AHC delete is your best path. And find different mechanics.

Yeah, one if the mechanics said the pump is toast. But again, if not looking to repair lines (or pump), I'm wondering how useful/capable are current OE struts and shocks and springs - do they operate at like 80 percent without AHC running through them, or do they degrade rapidly and fail completely without the fluid?
So far I haven't FELT much a difference when riding.
Definitely considering deletion .. but if OE parts work well enough without AHC fluid then I'm inclined to stick with what's there.

It will destroy the system to run without fluid. That's equivalent to a running with blown shocks, but worse as it's also blown springs. The AHC system relies on hydraulic pressure for its primary load support of the chassis. I would not drive the vehicle any longer without fluid as it risks damaging more components of the system.

It's unfortunate the mechanics are so out of their element here providing bad advice.

AHC is generally easy and cost effective to maintain provided the mechanics are informed. The shocks / hydraulic struts are pretty cheap. About $300 all around. The hydraulic line in the rear that tends to rust is about $100 and about a few hours to replace. Work is analogous to replacing a brake line which any mechanic can do. Bleed and flush about another $150 in fluid. Doable for $500 DIY or $1500-2000 if paying reasonable labor.

Or just toss in standard suspension. It'll never be as good as AHC, but good enough.
 
When you lose full pressure you'll be on the bump stops. AHC springs cannot support the weight of the vehicle. AHC shocks without fluid/proper working system provide zero damping.

If the system is maintaining ride height and not riding very harsh then its unlikely you have lost all fluid and pump is toast.
Will the system still raise and lower? Is it actively or has it ever pissed a bunch of hydraulic fluid?

Find a mechanic who actually knows the system for a 3rd opinion.
 
I had already swapped the rears out for conventional shock and spring so ignore how tall it is back there. But this is how low you'll sit if the system loses all pressure:

Got a glimpse of the reservoir back there and appeared empty. The hydraulic fluid trickles into puddles when vehicle is running. I have not personally pinpointed where leaks originate, only seen its endpoints and travel streams. Tech said he observed multiple leakage points along the line and at rear shock, which sounds plausible. Have not confirmed pump is bad. Wife who drives it says system can go from low to neutral but not high. So pump might not be done after all (good observation).

I'll search around DC/MD/VA area for someone familiar with AHC systems who can assess it.
 
What I would do ... stop driving the truck and get a cheap rental if no other vehicle is available.

It looks like the pump is not toast yet and if that is the case I would just fix the system per @TeCKis300 post above. You will have an excellent suspension back, wife will be amazed of how nice it drives (like new), and you get a lot of bonus points :) spending the same money as replacing it.

But if you continue driving it you will eventually damage the pump and then the cost will skyrocket. The same budget will only allow you to replace it with a conventional suspension.

Keep in mind that no matter how much money you throw at it your conventional suspension will never be as nice as AHC. That may be good enough for you but not for your wife.

It's very hard to see the fluid level if you dont know what to look for. For entertainment value and maybe a fix, I would top off the system and re-assess. There are youtubes on procedures to clear the codes.
