Was the sound only on initial start-up or did it persist after start-up?

Constant after start up, after building heat, and at any rpm.

Rice, bummer deal about the chain slap, man... Very disappointing, but hopefully it's something that can be rectified without much trouble. I'm very impressed with how much work y'all were able to accomplish in a short amount of time and the new engine is simply beautiful.

Looks fantastic installed!

Road test .....

noise still there but (am I imagining this?) not as bad. Can't hear it in the cab. Oil pressure good, pulls well, revs well, and is suuuper balanced. Will do some daily driving this week and keep my ear focused forward. Will report back.

Thanks again to everyone!

Nice wrenchfest guys. Now you are probably anxious to go to work Monday so you can get some rest :)

Going back to your first post... why did you say the 93-94 motors suck for boost?

Video of said noise?

Will get that posted sometime soon. Plan to detox a bit after the marathon wrench session.

The mechanicals of the 1FZ are great for boost. Fat intake runners, solid bottom end, yada, yada. The only real issue is OBDI systems being more of a hassle to rig up. Parallel, piggyback, or stand alone management systems are necessary. Stand alone is most difficult because the 93-94 use a dedicated transmission controller. I've done some looking into the system you run and a couple others and really am convinced it can work provided I do enough homework.

Gotcha. My plan was to eventually to put 6-8psi on my 2FE. With it being fully balanced now, you can just "feel" it is begging for more air.

Speaking of balanced..... that motor of Rice's may have a little noise going on but goot gawd its smooooooth.

What weight oil did you use for the initial break-in Rice?

10W-30. Have not done the first oil change yet but will see what's in there when it comes out.

Yeah, makes sense considering the temperatures.

Just wondering if a heavier oil for the initial start-up might have been a better idea. Thinking outloud here.

New timing components or used ones?

The oil weight is definitely the right choice. Thick oil suffers from one problem ... it's thick. With startups the critical issue is getting oil to all vulnerable points in a hurry. For that task thin is preferred.

The timing set is used, which I was fine with; HOWEVER, I'm seriously asking myself if there was a chance my timing sets from the 2 motors I had accidentally got mixed. If so I would put large odds on that being the noise. Since the only fix for that would involve a crazy amount of labor (and Jason would catch the first bus for the hills), I believe I'm happy driving it as is. :)

I thought noises like that are what the radio volume knob are for.

Great job on buttoning it up and driving it around. I've got a gopro you can use if you want to hear it under load.

Hey, you guys left the Ac belt off, right? that clutch assembly was quite wobbly.
