Hi all,

My clutch engages very high on my pedal and I've gone thru the FSM and only find this page, that pertains to clutch pedal adjustment.

I've checked all four tolerances and all are within specs.

I've also searched and can't find anything that suggests a 'proper pedal height engagement point'.

Does anyone know the proper point and how to adjust the clutch to engage at that point?

While 44 drives very well and I am used to the clutch, I'm worried that such a high pedal engagement will result in wear on the clutch.

BTW The clutch master cylinder was new when I bought 44 last March and I replaced the slave/release cylinder shortly thereafter (it was leaking).

Thanks!

How new is the clutch? Could it need adjusting?

No idea - I bought the truck last March.

But, what do you mean by 'adjusting'?

Other than a clutch rebuild, including 'installed load' measurements and clutch diaphragm uniformity check, I'm not aware of any other adjustments.

As I said, I already validated the four pedal tolerances. I forgot to mention, I also bled the clutch.

Danny - When I first got my 40 last March and was having the manifolds decked due to leaks, the mechanic said someone did a not so great job on the clutch install. It had a late clutch, almost at the end of the spring. He adjusted it, and now is more of an early clutch. Not sure what the adjustment was, but it sure made a heck of difference.

Haven't worked on a clutch in many a moon. As far as the clutch itself, throwout bearing or finger adjustment bolts are all I can come up with.:meh:

Danny, what about clutch slave adjustment?

EDIT: Okay, maybe that thread is not so helpful. This is something I need to do as well so I will be watching this thread.

Here's a couple more threads that MAY help (?):

Thanks Matt!

I hadn't seen these threads - most of the posts relate to the same adjustments I found in the FSM. The last post in your last thread was @Weber Sarge - I'm hoping he will chime and and tell us if he was able to lower the engagement point on his clutch pedal, back in 2010.

It seems I'm not the only confused person out there... my one potential takeaway, from the threads you offered is... perhaps, air in the lines is the true culprit behind high engagement... I'm going to bleed mine again after my next trip and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks GA! Sure would be nice to know what he adjusted...

I'll post results.

High engagement may be because your slave rod is adjusted to be too long. Not sure where it is in the FSM. Look at the rod coming out of the slave. It has a length adjusting nut with a jam nut. Loosen, shorten, tighten. You're probably also riding on the throw-out bearing. There should be a return spring at the slave and you should have 1/4" of free play between the

I can tell you that air in the line causes the opposite, barely engagement at the bottom of the pedal stroke. For the life of me I can't figure out where the site keeps getting in, as there are no leaks and I'm not losing fluid. Time to start replacing stuff.

Seems like it would have to be the master. If you haven't replaced them lately, or you bought something other than Toyota brand, just get new ones from Beno and be done with it for 30 years.

I think Fast Eddy has the important info-too high and you may be riding the TO bearing all the time---

Agreed. I replaced the matter a few years back and then it sat for quite a while. Third time I replaced all the cheaper stuff (hose, slave) hoping that the cheap solution would work. Never does.

Typically if you just bleed the cyldr the clutch engagement will be high. I think the measurement your looking for is @ the bottom of the page you referenced , "Pedal Free Play". I always make sure the piston in the slave is all the way back in the cyldr& adjust the freeplay like Eddie said, then bleed it, and adjust to your liking.

You must do the entire adjustment , not just part of it outlined in the FSM . I got mine right at halfway point - it's starting to pull the engine down good in 1st gear . Still a bit high to my liking as my legs are all screwed up from a construction accident in '06 . Make certain to pull the inspection cover and absolutely verify there is a distance between the clutch fork and that throwout bearing - it cannot ride that bearing or it will burn out as it's not designed for a constant load . The pedal freeplay is very important too , best to follow the fsm but there is some leeway to adjust it to personal preference .

Sorry guys - I'll have to come back to this next week - minor family emergency - I didn't want you to think I asked the question and then didn't follow up.

Try adjusting the slave cylinder rod and I haven't seen it mentioned yet but reaching to the top of the pedal and adjusting the bolt to get the pedal where you want it to be.

Danny, I agree with Fast Eddy, I had the exact same issue after I installed my new clutch, the pedal was engaging very high and after 3 to 4 adjustments of the slave cylinder rod I got the clutch pedal to engage at the correct height.

Thanks guys!

The pedal height and pedal free play are fine - I thought the slave or release cylinder were adjusted per specs as well. But, the concensus here appears to be slave cylinder - so, I will work with the slave this weekend and see where that takes me.

Thanks again!

Danny, here's a pic of my slave cylinder rod when I got it was perfectly adjusted, just for reference:
