Hey all! Any other early cruiser owners potentially interested in reproduction large “ear” wing nuts for the battery hold downs? Working with a local owner who has an original and looking into options. I want a pair for my truck and curious about others. I have no idea on cost at the moment (method, quantity, metal type), I know that will be a big factor in interest.
We are going to start modeling and I’ll keep this thread updated.

Going to be picking it up this week most likely. We will explore different methods to reproduce. And I’ll report back the options. We may try lost wax casting but I’ll look into 3D printing in metal as well.

Yes to a pair or two depending. I wonder if they are bronze? I suspect they were sand mold cast.

Yeah good question. The friend I am getting the original one from had another cast in bronze. So that is something we will look at.

Anecdote. On a family vacation in 2004 to Seattle, I ended up spending the day in Gig Harbor with @Landpimp and his collection of vintage Landcruisers. After showing me around the yard, we went to one of the incomplete rigs that was just for parts. I spied the two elephant ears on the battery tray and asked for them. John was obliging.😊

I still have them. Good karma.

Bumping this old thread. In the pic above, is that the original rectangular battery top hold down? My '66 stout is missing that part and the wing nuts and I'm guessing it's the same as FJ25 or early 40? Any progress on the wing nut repros?

Hey! Yup, it’s still in the works. It was behind another project in the pipeline. Hoping for an update soon. :) I’ll report back.

Looking into production options. Trying to find the cheapest possible way to make them. CNC seems the most likely route.
But money talk time! It would be good to get a feel for people’s interest if a pair costs $30-$60. Helps determine feasibility. This is a super niche product so no way to justify making a thousand and competing with standard hardware options.
You can DM if you don’t want to indicate publicly what you are ok with paying.

I'd go $40 for two wing nuts. Don't make me experiment with sand casting. You may recall my ill fated rear tail light cones. :frown:

Small test batch ordered! They will be stainless 17-4. Should be perfect for the application. I’ll update when they arrive.

Can't wait to see them! Will they need to be drilled and tapped for correct thread ?
They will be tapped for sure. M8-1.25 :)
They will arrive with a glass bead blasted finish, curious what that is going to look like.
