Just wanted to see what weight engine oil people are using in their rigs? The mileage I have on my rig is only 119K driven by a rich old lady (one owner) from Los Altos, Ca. So in my case living in NORCAL isn't too big of an issue.I'm just curious.I guess it really depends on where you live Temperature wise, mileage and how much you dog your s*&%. Some people say use 15W40 Diesel Rotella because of the cleaning agents and thickness of the oil. Would 15W40 be ok in CA? I normally don't follow manufacturer's recommendations on engine oil cuz 10W30 is rated for a new car with practically no mileage.Thoughts???

15w-40 is what Mr T recommends for everywhere except the US (which is 5w-30). It's what I use in both of my trucks. I do not use the high mileage stuff.

You will be fine running it. It's not recommended for extreme cold environments (think like 10*F or lower).

I use the shell rotella 15w40 on everything i have. my old cruiser, my new cruiser. my v12 mercedes, my little acura integra. As a guinie pig of the 15w40 (especially for the midwest), i can say that i have never had any problems, But everytime i go to the oil change shop they try to convince me to use something else, or synthetic or whatever new crap theyre pushing for that day. one time the manager of the shop came and said 'youre going to ruin your motor using this heavy oil. its for semi trucks!'. personal preference for me because its all i know. my father worked at the oil fields in iran and in texas and everywhere hes worked, the vehicles used 15w40. whether it was a rambler, or fj40, or international truck.

The only reason my mom's new lexus isnt on the rotella is because she prepaid in advance and thinks whatever the dealer sells her is best. (she even bought lifetime leather protectant to prevent stains and wear :rolleyes:).

shell rotella 5-40 synthetic

I have run Shell Rotella 15W40 for the last 17 months and have not had any problems.

I've been using Mobil 1 10w40 high mileage for over 3 years.

Is the 0w40 m1 much better than the 10w40 m1?

I have been running Motul 5W-40 synthetic and previously used Mobil 1 5W-30. The truck leaked oil from the oil pump and/or crank seal with the Mobil, with the Motul it is dry as a bone. I will be switching to Rotella 5W-40 synthetic at the next service for cost reasons. I run Rotella in my BMW and have had nothing but great success running it in all sorts of race cars at the shop.

The PO ran the 15w40 Rotella and i run Mobile One in the weight.

I believe the only reason the lighter weights are used in the U.S. is because the manufacture has to use a gas saving oil, i.e., a lighter weight oil thus reducing the energy it takes to push it around the engine and over all its parts, or something like that.

Its been pretty well documented on MUD.

I dont get the same oil pressure when i use a lower vicosity.

PO Used royal purple, I switched it to mobile 1 full synthetic 10w 30 at 215k runs like a top

Rotella 5w40 syn .. great stuff. Year around use up here in Canuck land.

I have run Shell Rotella 15W40 for the last 17 months and have not had any problems.

I've run it for the last 10 years in every vehicle I've owned. Can't say enough good things about it.
