I'm looking at the Shell Rotella for my new to me FJ80. Whats the difference between T4, T5 and T6? I'll be keeping mine up in the Catskills of NY using it in winter. I'm thinking 15w40 would be fine. Any reason to jump down to 10w?

How's your Delo 400 15w-40 going in your fzj80? I have a 97 & am seeing about 1qt every 1500k, currently using Chevron 5w-30 Costco. I'm on the fence between rotella & Delo, always been a Chevron fan though. ThanksJust switched to Chevron Delo 400, 15W-40. Trying to improve oil consumption

Thanks, my local Costco has delo 400 and in cheap on sale. Would you still use the delo at a good price over the T6?Well, since my post I've switched over to Shell Rotella T6 15W-40 awhile back. The odometer just rolled over to 270k miles. Shell RotelIa was easy to find at my nearby Advance Auto and is cheap. As for oil consumption, I quit measuring my oil top offs so I can't tell if its better or not from a usage standpoint. For as often that I need to add oil, the cost of Shell is perfect for me. I'm certain my oil loss is through the valve guides and not so much across the rings, so improved oil control by switching brands/types is not as much of a concern for me. Never had the head off so I can't tell how much crosshatch is left on the cylinders.

I plan to build a new engine with a factory short block for an eventual Wit's end Turbo it's just not in the budget right now and I'm trying to get as much life as I can.
When I replaced the head gasket and rebuilt the head on my old 97, it quit using oil all together. Valve guides and fresh gaskets dried everything up.Well, since my post I've switched over to Shell Rotella T6 15W-40 awhile back. The odometer just rolled over to 270k miles. I would use either one, if you have easy access and the price is right. Chevron, Shell, Mobil, etc...I wouldn’t be afraid of any of these major brands. I think us picky owners (myself included), are more sensitive to oil brands than our engines are. These are durable engines that are designed to operate reliably in third world countries with substandard maintenance practices and cheap fluids. Modern engine oils are pretty good. I recommend picking a brand you trust ( Chevron delo is one I would use again), invest in an oil sample program such as Blackstone or Cat SOS, and change oils when needed. people
that’s great feedback. Thanks you. Both my 80’s drink and drip oil. Just need time to park one and do this job. When I replaced the head gasket and rebuilt the head on my old 97, it quit using oil all together. Valve guides and fresh gaskets dried everything up.
Awesome thanksWhen I replaced the head gasket and rebuilt the head on my old 97, it quit using oil all together. Valve guides and fresh gaskets dried everything up.
Well oil consumption has vanished with 5k on the new motor build. When I replaced the head gasket and rebuilt the head on my old 97, it quit using oil all together. Valve guides and fresh gaskets dried everything up.
On my brand new OEM 1FZ-FE (minus valve cover), I ran Toyota conventional and Valvoline synthetic blend 5W-30 for the first three break-in friendly engine oil changes. Why 5W-30? Because Toyota recommends it.
At about 9K miles young, I made the switch to this...

Because...
Easily hit 80-85mph up the Grapevine no sweat. Cruises at 85mph pushing 37 KM3s, no complaints. Zero oil consumption since birth. Ask me how things are faring at 556K miles or 278K miles on my 80's 2nd 1FZ-FE.
If you're into the whole more zinc/moly the better internet theory, the data shows Redline as being off the charts. Gl!
Project farm, I dig his content.
Glad to hear your build is running well, I just finished a trip to Oregon and over the siskiyou pass a few times left me motivated to get that shortblock ordered. Fully loaded with the family and gear she did 65-70 floored. Can't complain.
The rebuild I just finished was intended to buy time and not miss out on wheeling trips this summer. I'm blown away at how well she runs now and look forward to the new build experience. More power would always be nice.
I have also been reading about IAC and a snorkel is on my short list of projects.
Hahaha right! Those passes in NorCal, S Oregon are no joke.
I’m sure the CO guys are chuckling at this.![]()
