Well I guess I shouldn't say that you can't. But you can't do it with traditional film. It will blister and peel.

Like I said I went through all of this when I was considering a fast 80 series.

You can buy the polycarbonate pre tinted and it comes in different levels and different colors, grays, bronze, etc. Or you can take you chances with a plexitint film, but I saw mixed reviews.

Well that's a bummer. Why can't it be tinted with film? Do they make it in diff. levels of tint?

No you can't tint poly with film, you need to buy it tinted

The positive is you dont worry about tearing it

What do you estimate the cost verses aluminum also how thick would it need to be. The panels are 1/8" and plenty strong all other parts are made to work with the thickness. Thicker could change several things and present new problems:(

That was my first thought Phil. The latches must catch on the inside the same and the thickness of material might screw up the lock.
If you where to make it 1/4" thick would it work without any other changes on to the hardware?

Sounds like this poly can be tinted with average results. Worth a try.

I would think you would need to be thicker than 1/8" I was going to use 1/4" but I was going to be ok with a little flex. Really I would have to get both the aluminum and poly in my hands and compare the two. Maybe order a sample or 12"x12" sheet of the 1/4" and 3/8" poly and cut a 12"x12" 1/8" piece of aluminum and flex them. lol.

Question for the people that want to replace a window with a window. Wouldn't be easier to install the same latch for the aluminum panel into the glass? That way you can open the window from the outside. Or just get a piece of poly cut to the same thickness and dimensions and install a lockable latch? I actually like the sliding window for what it is. Mine don't slide worth a s*** so that's why I don't use them as much anymore. Just thinking out load.

Ran into a similar thing with the aluminum as you probably know there are several grades and types the 5052 seems to be the best choice given the thickness. Now move to poly and throw gas struts into the mix

It all looks easy when it all done and working but it does take time to get it right. :crybaby:

I use my window a lot to get gear. BUT its a tight fit getting both arms in there especially with a lift. i'm sure ppl are like WTF is that dude trying to climb in that little window...HA

Yep IH8 carriers with or without flip up windows BTDT too much

First thing the wife said when I brought home the new 100 series a few days ago I thought we were done with tire carriers.

BTW I sold it today

Yup. Been there. I usually leave it cracked so I have accessed when traveling.

I like the poly idea because I'm not concerned with my rear visibility but I occasionally have to use the third row for passengers and don't want them feeling like they are in the back of a cheap panel van.

Yep and you have 2 panes of 4mm glass passing over each other for a minimum of 8.5/9mm that is why I suggested 3/8" if you want it to be as ridged as possible and fit in the factory glass location. I checked my order when I was thinking about it and I ordered 1/4" it was pretty good for my wants but I would want it a little thicker for this purpose.

8574K284 Impact-Resistant Polycarbonate Sheet, 1/4" Thick, 12" X 48", Clear 1

Factory glass is 4mm. 1/8" is darn near 3mm.

I like the tinted poly idea that mimics the oe glass appearance.

Have you been successful in finding a similar shade/color/tint of poly?
