Gorgeous work - really nice fab work, and shows courage to have tried this as you did.

A buddy of mine once used a standard-sized oxygen cylinder (from his cutting torch set) as a form, around which to bend the new fender metal. I don't know if he heated the metal, but it would be a good idea, based on your kinking issues.

An oxygen bottle is the right dia it's what I used
Heat would be a bad idea using a oxygen bottle though
I was using 18 gage and it bends a lot easier than 16
