1978 if I recall correctly.
Mark, let me know if you have any issues with the harness/electrical when you get to that point.
FJ40's had splash shields? Would this help keep mud out of the engine bay when offroad?
Totally serious - I've never seen one. My truck didn't have one of these, or a skid plate - but it had been V8 converted long before I got it. I've thought about fabricating something up to keep the mud out of my engine bay but the diff/engine clearance is a bit of an issue. Plus, I always wondered if it would do more to TRAP mud that got in rather than prevent it in the first place. I also worry about V8 cooling, and whether a guard would give the hot air less places to escape.
Mark, I was really impressed when I opened the box and pulled out the harness. I’ve read all the reviews, but it was the first time seeing one in person. It’s obvious you have the same attention to detail that I put in to my carb rebuilds.
The harness took literally two minutes to hang. I’ve moved it back and forth incrementally twice now as I line it up with the switches in the center of the dash. Hoping to finish that this Thursday, but also have to put time into buttoning up the cooling system and starting a mock up on the exhaust.
The one thing I did notice is that the wiring for the hazard flasher comes out of the harness closer to the ashtray than would seem appropriate given the switch location.
Thanks for the compliment! I have severe OCD when it comes to my wiring work...
One thing I have learned about Toyota and their wiring harnesses: No two are identical! I originally thought all the harnesses of a given month/year would be the same. They are electrically, but can be quite different on physical layout! I can lay two harnesses on a template board, and the location of different branches can be as much as 2 to 4 inches different. Then throw in the differences between Federal Spec, California Spec and Canada/Australia harnesses and things get even more interesting. I figure Toyota, (or Yazaki), buiIt these by hand just like I do, so there would be variations due to human input.
I don't have room in my basement shop for all the template boards I would need if I wanted to have one for every unique harness. So I keep detailed notes on differences between years/month/specs/country and refer to those when building. Harnesses built totally from scratch I always add a inch or two to each wire branch vs. OEM to make it a bit easier to hook stuff up. For refurbishments I have to deal with what was built at the factory.
Mark, what oil filter housing are you using?
Not to hijack but about the splash guards; Rick will the drivers side splash guard like the one pictured work if you have aftermarket exhaust header? I seem to have all the pieces, just not sure how or where they bolt up. Thanks again. TomHere are some photos of the splash shields ('77 FJ40) Mark is referencing.
