The rain was endless. We needed to keep pushing. Other sights along this route were miner’s cabins and two large avalanche debris fields from the record snowfall last winter.

We finally neared the timberline and found a kismet campsite with a fire ring shelter made from freshly lodgepole pine branches. The rain gradually slowed and we settled into this perfect spot. We stayed nice and dry while sipping some cold beverages and cooking steaks over the fire. Tomorrow, we would make the short hike to Pomeroy Lakes @White Stripe.

The next morning, we made the hike to some absolutely beautiful scenery. These lakes sit well above timberline and are pure snowmelt. We ran into several fishermen up there as well. Amazing how fish can survive the winters in these frozen masses.

Eventually, we headed down to the trail and stopped in the town of St. Elmo to look around. I saw a nice looking FZJ80 and struck up a conversation with a guy named Seth from Ft. Collins (apparently he is on this site, but I can’t remember what his username is). Shortly after, two women rolled up in a 100 Series and purposefully parked next to us. We all spent the time talking about our love for these trucks and the adventures they take us on. It is surely true.

My son and I later meandered back to Buena Vista for a snack before driving the 80 miles back home. We caught a nice summer shower on Highway 24 as we drove along.

One more trip in the 40, and one more great bonding experience for me and my son. He had a blast. The dog did too.

Misfit is right - - that Mustang's gotta go.

Cool - Japanese pony car!

Ha! Awesome.

That 1984 Mazda RX-7 in the upper left is nearly identical to my first car. Was an absolute blast to drive.

Well, we have something in common.....take a guess at what my first car was....(albeit a 79 model)

You are doing right by that FJ40. What it was made to do, and you have me super jealous! Man I miss trips like that in the mountains in a Land Cruiser. Very cool, keep them coming.

I did some flying yesterday in search of those elusive mountain spots to hunt and camp this fall. This is such a cool way to cover massive amounts of terrain. We also had a black bear, a herd of elk, countless mulies, a porcupine, and a mountain lion on our property this week. Feels good to be back in Colorado.

But on a tech note, I topped off fluids today in preparation for a fantastic camping and road trip with great friends through central Colorado in Pikachu and another 1977 FJ40. I’ll report back when we return.

Just.... awesome! I’m envious and would’ve loved to have been in a life situation and owner of my 40 back when my kids were that age - good for you!!!

Just made it through this entire thread. Inspirational, on the FJ and life front. Congratulations on getting back to Colorado and great work with the FJ40.

And if you want to share a bit about your (?) plane and such that’d be ok also.
