x2 - made things easier, esp the part about the high pressure port coming loose before the banjo bolt let go.

Thanks!

For the return line Part number 44412-28160, does it come with 2 hoses?

44412-28160 is actually for a Previa and you use it as a substitute for the hose between the gear and the cooler inlet. There is no substitute for the hose from the cooler to the reservoir.

Some feedback on thus job.
be sure to be careful with gear. Try not to goober it up. If u have any indentions due to handling or when u try getting it off, carefully sand the imperfection off. I had to redo install due to gear noise. I cleaned up the gear, put it back in, and no noise. (My compressor and impact wrench are not the greatest and tried the soft vice method...didn't work so the heavy leather glove and impact wrench finally worked for gear removal).
Next is bleeding. Follow the guidance by CDan and others. Saves a lot of time and wondering.

The hose is leaking or is the leak at the banjo bolt connection??

Not the bolt connection. Best as I can tell its where the hose is attached to the fittings. I'll clean it up well and then watch it better before I replace it.

I'm a pretty big newb, but I'm trying to replace my power steering pump and lines and I'm having a hell of a time getting the gear off the pump. I got the nut off without too much trouble but using the gear puller isn't working out. Does anyone have any advice for how to keep the gear from spinning while twisting the screw in the middle of the puller? Between myself holding the gear and my brother twisting the wrench, the two of us can't get the gear off...frustrating.

I just replaced my PS pump and high pressure hose following these instructions. For a dental student with no previous experience (other than brakes and rotors and oil changes on my cruiser) it went pretty well which says a lot about how good this thread is.

My PS went from non-functional (very difficult to turn and whiney) to working beautifully. Only problem now is that it leaks...probably because I ignored step 6 of the original thread and didn't have my cigar and Rockies mug. It did not leak before so I assumed it was something I messed with. It appears though that it is another part of the PS system because the high pressure line and PSP do not have fluid on them.

The line circled in this image I stole from another post is wet with fresh fluid down nearest to the ground and where it is bracketed to the truck but I cant tell where this line goes. The return hose to the reservoir also looks suspect. The power steering works great though and only needs to be topped off after each drive (needs ~1/5 qt). Am I going to hurt the PS system if I continue to drive it and fill it up while I work to find exactly where the leak is? Thanks for any help and thanks for getting me this far.

Thanks! From what I understand about this system (very little), this is the return line from the gear box to the PS reservoir that is leaking. This line also has a cooling element on it somewhere? I'm guessing I could have caused the leak because I did not jack the truck up and move the wheels side to side after installing the PSP and filling it with fluid. Just a guess though. In any case, thanks for your input. I'll just keep it topped off and hope for the best.

My Gates high pressure is failing after 2 years / 25,000 miles.

It was almost impossible to rule out a leak at the banjo fitting. Gates hose uses two copper washers instead of the one-piece double OEM washer (but Toyota also used to use two copper washers).

OEM hose is now installed.

TIP TO REMOVE FLARE CONNECTION: BEST ACCESS IS THROUGH THE WHEEL WELL. REMOVE THE SPLASH GUARDS AND ITS EASY TO ACCESS.

When connecting the high pressure flare nuts to the steering box, should I torque to FSM spec of 26 ft-# (with a funky set up between SST flare wrench and torque wrench) or just snug it up good?? Thanks for this helpful write up!!

i found it hard to get a torque wrench down there. With some extensions and wobbly ends, i was able to use a torque wrench, so that's what i did.

Thanks to CDan and his son Ben, they were able to find a hose that fits the hose from the cooler to the reservoir. Same ID/OD--The hose works well from evidence.

There is a reason he is called the Shaman.

PN: 44412-04010 (late 1990's to mid-2000's Tacoma). Very reasonably priced as well.

Do the bends in the replacement Tacoma hose get in the way of anything or does it just take a slightly different route in the same space as the original hose?

The Tacoma hose has NO bends moulded into it. The original 80 hose has a couple slight bends moulded into it.

~320 bucks to be perfect or ~27 bucks to get damn close. Take yer pick.
