So I read a thread the other day, can't for the life of me remember which one, and the poster said he went to the dealer for his (96 if I'm not mistaken) ignition key, to get a new one made. He stated he paid 35 or 40 bucks per blank, which really blew my mind knowing a 96 doesn't take anything special. Well, the PO of mine provided me with one key, and its an ilco, junk. Many times now I've had to fiddle with it, jiggle it a bit to make it either start to turn the ignition, or to get it to release all the way when turning off the truck (yes, its in park and the safety switch works fine.). I witnessed my fiance fumbling with it the other day, and watched her force it a bit as I cringed and said NO! Today I hopped in the truck and started to turn the ignition, feeling the key "give" or bend a bit. So I called The local dealer, and asked if they had blanks, "yes", rad, hold two and I'll be there shortly. Expecting a hit, the " joe-schmow" price was 15 and change, including the cut. My buddy, old boss and local Toyota guru who works in parts, said my cost is just under 9 bucks a pop! Done! He asked if I wanted to cut them using the old key, or get the key code, costs 10 bucks. I said yes, a "new" key is my preference, cut from the code and not the junk key I have. Long story short, 2 new factory keys, cut via key code, and obtaining the code, 29 bucks out the door and they work perfectly, door cyl as well. So, there's the official word. No hookup, keys are $16, and code is 10!
