at one time cars didnt have seat belts ;)

and where they did ...you werent required to wear them.

these are a carry over since the Toyota BJ Jeep... technically they can even be seen in the few images of the Toyota AK10 as well

it also makes leaning over out the door when wheeling more comfortable IMO

Thanks Johnny! Good info.

That can't be correct. Evenything in LC we have to credit to jeep. The fact that the LC has four wheels and a spare is only because it was on a jeep first.

I would say something about seat belts but I would only date myself.:bang:

I know one thing about the lights, don't plug them into the wall, as the plug will fit, blows the bulb out really fast.

I have the storage bag and lights in both of my cruisers. The one in my 40 the bag has ripped down the side some. The one in my 60 is hardly used. They are kind of handy, I have used them on the side of the road a few times, but a flashlight is quicker and easier to whip out, plus the cord is kind of short on them.

At one time we owned a decommissioned M151 Mutt, and it had the door straps. Since it was from the mid 70's, it musta been copied off the FJ40 door straps.

nope toyota did copy...heres a 1941 picture of the Bantam BRC 40 ... and it has the door strap :)

Why would you need these straps if you are wearing seat belts?

Seatbelts? We don't need no stinkin seatbelts! :-) For some period of time in the 70's, the shoulder harness attached to the top so when the top came off.....

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check and see if I need one for my 79. Have a few of covers laying around. The most is the for very early LCs. Those were made of metal. The down side is you have to be sure it doesn't touch the fuse holder or wires.

Yeah that would be bad if it contacted the fuse block!

The shoulder belts on my 77 were attached to the top

Three point seat belts starting in 1/76 in the US market. That part of 76 and the 77 model they were attached to the hard top. Then in 78 they moved to the roll bar. The fixed nut in the top started with the 73 model. Other markets around the world like Europe got three point seat belts early then the US. The bracket that spot welded to the lower part wasn't there in our market before 1/76 just the top fixed nut. If those markets used the same bracket used here in 76 and 77 I don't know.

It's an amplifier spanner that fits the accelerator feedback sensor on the flux capacitor. Rare option, hang on to that 40.

I bought my '78 new and the tool kit had nothing like that. It had the usual screwdrivers, open end wrenches, tire iron, jack handle, and plug tool.

Does anyone recognize this object I found in the tool kit of my 78 FJ40

You sure about this? My May 76 has lap belts but my November 76 (titled as a 77) has the shoulder strap. Both look original. I always assumed the change was with the September model for marketing reasons. There were a couple more I have noticed like the hardtop vent windows and tube spare carrier. Maybe I just have the last of the lap belts!

My 01/76 has the original shoulder belts the attach to the hard top. Hmm?

Do any of the tool handles fit in that slot? Like a t-wrench for the screwdriver or one of the other tools?

My info was off SOR's website. Generally anything post mid sixties is correct. The early years stuff for the FJ40 is listed as 58 to a date which isn't correct. Later the only thing that stands out as possibly as wrong is the 71 seats. All the 71 seats I have seen were split back with the center fixed section for a emissions tank. They show that as only 72. I would like to see a 71 seat that didn't had the fixed section. 70 to 71 the latch that lock the back upright changed so a single back section with the would be easy to tell.:meh:
