OTOH if we were discussing BMW or Mercedes, all these parts would still be available. The prices would be shocking, but at least the factory would still make them if we asked.

Yes .... they have great resources available as well...
They have practically ALL! FSMs as well as technical information and manuals available and very extensive librarys

There is truth to that, but I think there's a lot more to it. Example: what about the demand in the US for diesel engined 'Cruisers? Yet no supply for this market. Another example: does Toyota realize that the demand for a late 40 series steering wheel is such that new OEM ones that show up on Ebay sell for more than $800? Then there are power sterring parts for 40 series, which would have no trouble selling I'm sure if they were stocked. For certain parts, like a speedometer, I'd pay well over list price for a mint or new one if I could find one, and i'm sure i'm not the only one who would pony up mucho dinero for certain now-unobtanium parts. Seems like there is plenty of demand to me in certain areas. I think more to the point is that Toyota discontinues parts support for vehicles as it costs them money to stock the parts, and they would prefer you bought a new vehicle from them instead of nursing an old rig along.

I understand all your examples but you're looking at an incredibly small sampling. The demand being high for a small amount of people does drive the prices up on things that pop up. If no one bought a steering wheel for 15 years and then one person wants one and is willing to pay over list price, that doesn't make any business sense. Why would you tie up capital for something that you may or may not sell in 10 or 15 years? I'm not arguing against the fact that people want to buy it, I'm just telling you how they look at it. That money could be used to stock more Camry air filters which they sell thousands per month.

Without getting into a huge debate, let me just say that: #1. I am on your side, otherwise I would not spend countless hours of my time trying to hunt down LC parts to make very little profit, #2. We cannot change the way they do this, so we just need to capitalize on the parts we can get and hope they keep stocking and making them. #3. Of course they want you to buy a new Toyota! That's how they are the biggest car company in the world. Although they do take the parts business very seriously as well.

Speaking of which, I was trying to source a carpet for an 80 not long ago. I sent some emails and they responded that we could have one made for about $6000 MY COST. The customer obviously didn't want to pay that much for a $600 carpet though. So, it could be done in some cases but not worth it IMO. Maybe we all need to get together and start making reproduction parts for all these that are no longer available... :hhmm:

Those parts are highly desirable now but not when they discontinued making them. The dusty ones from the last production run sat in inventory until someone decided to switch that production to other necessary items. At least that's what I'm thinking. In 1976 I was working on a '68 Camaro and was shocked at parts that were discontinued. Example, I was converting an automatic to a four speed and could no longer get the clutch/brake pedal mechanism. I'm proud that Toyota and some dealers on this forum are able to find the parts they do.

Here's a part VERY seldom seen but Vic over at Hadley Industries has come to the rescue with an excellent reproduction. The lighter strap is the repro and the darker strap is OEM. If your new to Cruisers, these are Safety Straps the are made to keep you in the truck if you take your doors off.

Those straps are nice. Got porn pics of the early tubular hinge bars they connect to?

Vic also is/was repopping a very stock appearing 75-78 exhaust, FWIW.

Below is a pic of a recent delivery of OEM goodies. The tire rack/amby door bumper was the last one in captivity, AFAIK.

the HT pad at A pillar pad, would you or anyone have a picture of exactly how this is placed? for the life of me i cannot figure this one out. or is it for specific years? mine is a 78.

thanks for any help on this.

You guys should make this a sticky/faq. I'll volunteer my services to check the availability for the part numbers.

You willing to ship to Canada? Most US dealers won't. I think Toyota told them not to so they don't undercut the Canadian dealers.

Our dealer list price is double to triple the US dealer price. I just paid $9 each for the little rubber plug that goes in the rear floor behind the seats of a BJ42. Same plug as the one in the footwell. Now you might think $9 for one isn't toooo bad. But I needed 4 plus two more of a different size. Now I've spent $60 on six plugs that any American can get for $10. Licence plate light (81270-60091) for $68.00. I need two but not at that price, they are $25 in the US.

Trouble is, US dealers cannot get Non-US spec parts out of the Ontario warehouse even though they can see them in the system (so I am told). For example - fan hub ( /clutch/coupler whatever you wanna call it) for a 1983 3B diesel. There was one in the Ontario CA warehouse but Village Toyota in FL could not buy it. I need two. I can get my dealer here to bring it in but he wants nearly $400 for it (and our dollar is worth more than yours ATM!)

Rant over. But seriously Sam - will your dealership ship to the great white north?

I have shipped to Canada MANY times in the past. I can't any longer unfortunately. You are correct about Toyota. They have ammended the dealer agreement so that we CANNOT ship outside the country any more. Check my vendor thread for more information.

And thats ok Sam. There are ways around it. What dissapoints me most is Toyota Canada is essentially punishing Canadians for buying their vehicles and caring enough about them that they want to maintain said vehicles. From what I understand the extortionary pricing for Toyota parts in not caused by (surprisingly) taxes or even greedy dealers. Its corporate Toyota Canada who sets the pricing.

Anyway, this isn't the thread for my problems. I'll have to write a sternly worded letter to Toyota Canada. They must have caller ID cuz the Western Canadian district office won't answer my calls anymore.

Why would you need these straps if you are wearing seat belts?

at one time cars didnt have seat belts ;)

and where they did ...you werent required to wear them.

these are a carry over since the Toyota BJ Jeep... technically they can even be seen in the few images of the Toyota AK10 as well

it also makes leaning over out the door when wheeling more comfortable IMO

A fellow mudder has also reproduced these straps https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/481542-fj40-oem-door-saftey-straps-reproduction.html He also made the backets that attached to the top of the tub and not the door catch. While the door catch works on any post 63 the tub brackets was used by Toyota into the seventies. The rough shape original pair I have was came off a 71 FST with the tub bracket. I also have a pair of the later style still in the bags with the part numbers. I've heard these came standard on all models at one time but have never seen any literature that backs this up. My set was suppose to have come in a 78 hard top.

Another part that seems to go missing is the plastic cover for the fuse block. My 70 FJ40 I purchase last year was missing it. Off the 71 FST besides the straps I stripped many other things. One of which was the wiring harness. The fuse block still had the cover. Even though I got this back in the late eighties and who know how long the vehicle has been in the junk yard it already had issue with the fuw block. The plastic was melted on the light and horn circuits where the plastic touched the fuse holders. Anyone know if these are available?

The one for the 70 is disco (82611-30010). In fact all except the 79-80 are disco. That one is 82611-90301, $22.39 MUD price.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check and see if I need one for my 79. Have a few of covers laying around. The most is the for very early LCs. Those were made of metal. The down side is you have to be sure it doesn't touch the fuse holder or wires.

speaking of light...also the inspection lamp very often is missing

There were a few little changes to those over the years. Have a few of these some even with the little plastic they came in. Lights are still in good shape compared to the bags.
