I have seen a few of these in my day but they are usually long gone. Not really sure what it's purpose was unless its a cushion for the stock steel wheel - this is a 78

I don't think that's OEM Overton.

It just looks like a bit of tubing sliced down the middle to me and no doubt the PO used it to cushion something or other.

But you've reminded me of something that really was OEM on 78-84 models on the rear that I've never seen in recent times.

The rear hinges on the ambulance doors had plastic inserts to cushion and prevent paint damage to the hinges when the doors are swung wide open as far as they'll go.

I can't even find them on the EPC right now.

They were each made of white (or perhaps clear that went white over time) plastic and slipped/clipped over part of each hinge.

I can't remember if they were on all four hinges originally or just maybe the two upper ones.

I'd photograph one except the last one on my BJ40 probably split and fell off about 10 years ago.

This part is OEM alright I've seen it before and I've seen it on the microfiche. The part you're talking about is pictured here and it's on the lower hinges only

Ah. I see now that it didn't carry through to 1979 which is why I never had it on mine. And your second pic shows it much more clearly as an indisputably-OEM part.

Must be this part (circled):

Thanks.

Mine (on my 1979) were definitely white rather than black but they split apart and fell off.

Perhaps the black lasts better.

PS. Good heavens!!!!!

You say that protector for the hood (that allows it to be rested against the roof) isn't rare!!!!

I've never EVER seen one before. Mine must have gone missing within the first 2 years of my BJ40's life because it was without that when I bought it in 1981.

I dude on Ebay makes little kits that has those on it for the early versions of the tailgate (lift gate and swing out doors). I have bought several things from him. A real nice guy and good quality stuff. I tried the rubber innertube thing and just wasnt skilled enough. This guys stuff is cut perfectly. No he is not my uncle...just letting you know in case you didnt or was interested...

My spare tire rack still has that piece ('77).

I had one stopper on my truck and I bought the other one on Ebay. I searched until I saw a tire carrier with one and emailed the guy for the part only.

I just picked up four of these from a dealer. Around $2 apiece. Put one on my 70 and didn't use any glue. Figured if I lost it I would just use another with some 3M glue. So far it still there. Not sure when these were added to the FJ40 but my 73 hard top still has the piece.

Many of the early split hoods with the chrome spear have a nice crease in the spear from tilting the hood back onto the roof. I have lost several of the gutter edge pads by not gluing them down.

While not necessary if you think to put some padding up there before tilting the hood back, I guess out on the road it's not thought about when having to pull over away from home.

Thanks, Greg, for bringing this back up, and with some photos for posterity.

Is it possible you could tell us which dealer , just in case our locals don't have the parts?

I'll find the part number and post it Saturday. Since I already had one and knew about I had Camelback Toyota parts person bring the top on the computer screen. Any Dealer should be able to find it but will post the part # up to make it easier.

As Long as we're talking about parts seldom seen these rubber pieces usually go missing..

You're undoubtably the expert on rarely-seen parts Overton.

I'd be tempted to try and buy some of them (from Toyota ... assuming they're still available) except the UV is so severe where I live that they'd cost me too much compared to their lifespan.
