Looks good! As you get into it, let us know what you think about the quality of work from Knighton's shop.

Knighton's may have included the shims as an incidental if they had set the cams.
I had Andy build the small block heads for my jeep, he has been a machinist at Knightons for years and really knows his sh*t

Hee hee. Ya, I had a bunch made. Which means I'm in business. $6.50 each, unless you are HDC, then I will sell them for a little less. Problem is, I can't think of a single HDC member with a 2.7L Tacoma. This will be up on the MUD Storefront as soon as I get my valve cover back from power coating and I can model them.

Ya, but, they are wrong. See pic. There should have been a chrome border around them. I've called the company. The representative I talked to looked at the art Steve did, and agreed it shows a chrome border. I'm waiting to hear back. It looks like they are going to make it good. If not, I have a backup company. Also, they were cut off-center … an issue that will be resolved if they border the decal.

Sexy. Thanks to Tim at Absolute Powder Coating. The valve cover and plenum are now gun metal gray. The plenum is sporting a new badge too.

A little camera silliness this morning.

I wish I had enough spare time to make glamour shots of my engine rebuild. I don't even have time to change the oil in my car when it's due.

Who says an engine can't be artwork?!?

Marc, that is a step up from a glamour shot? That's porn right there.

I like how you used a velvet blanket for the backdrop.

Actually, it a focusing cloth used on a large format view camera. Black on one side. White on the other.

That sounds fancy and artsy.

Do you have the camera to go with said focusing cloth?

Just cursious as I spent a couple of years in undergrad lugging around various 4x5 field cameras...

Yes, yes I do. An old-ish Calumet (Tachihara) 4x5 cherry wood view camera. I even have film for it still … but getting it processed anymore is difficult. I need to send it to Colorado. It's a fun camera to use. It really slows one down with all the controls … none of which are automatic. It's the ultimate manual camera with perspective controls today's cameras can only dream of.

That's pretty.

A little update on the valve adjustment. As luck would have it NONE of the shims I have will work. They are all too thick. I guess with the valve grind, and the valve seat grind, the valves stick up further. Like .30mm further. So, it looks like I will need to replace all of them. I only checked the shims on the exhaust cam side, but I suspect the intake will be the same. At $10 each this is going to get spendy.

Well, that's a bummmer. Couldn't they have lopped off the valve stems in the appropriate amount? Or did they need permission to do this? IIRC, that's what I asked both engine shops to do on both of my head jobs.

That's not a good business practice. I am hoping it's just a glitch on their end and they will quickly reverse the charges. Either that, or there's a surprise bell housing on its way to you sooner than you expected...

Update. After three months of no contact I emailed MC in late September (9/26). No reply. Today I called and talked with the sales mgr. I'm not sure what's going on. It almost sounded like the bellhousings didn't get ordered from Japan. They had no news. The upside is I'm now talking to somebody that knows how to communicate, and is empowered to get this resolved.

The sales mgr called his importer to see what the status of the order was, but was unable to make contact. As of now, they are saying November, which would be five months since it was ordered. The sales mgr was rather shocked that my credit card was charged, especially after he read my email from June telling them not to charge until they ship.

So the bottom line is … nothing has changed at MC in the last 15 years.

Disappointing, but hopefully the sales manager can get you some results. It seems they should deliver the product or get you a refund. Or maybe get you a refund while they are trying to figure out what's going on with getting the bell housing. Please keep us posted.
