i vote for the semi red look... that'd be sweet. or at least bright red valve cover nuts...

I like the clear-coat option...that's what I plan to do with mine. (But what do I know?)

Good job on the cleanup! Mine didn't start out that "funky" but it's a long way from your finished product. Any idea how long the whole process took?

Great write-up! (As usual)

Well, I guess I have a total of 6 hours in it if you count the initial kerosene cleaning to remove the caked on oil/dirt, the steel wool to remove the green algae, the 400 grit sandpaper to remove the casting debris, the 1500 grit sandpaper to remove the 400 grit marks, let it sit for several months, then finally what I did to it last night.

If I had had a large 8" grinder equipped with a 12" buffing wheel and some aggressive compound I could have eliminated all the initial sanding steps and spent 2 hours on it total. All I had was the fine compound and a 4" cloth wheel. :D

A shop that does this type work could do it in no time, but they would charge maybe $100 to polish, then top coat it.

:p

Get the wife involved;) this will make her feel like she has a hand in it and keep us into cruisers longer:grinpimp: and SOMETIMES they are right:doh:

cant wait to see the end result

still haven't mooved that ignitor and dizzy yet?

Ours is polished but I did not clear coat it.

Sweet, I like the way it's coming out. I think you can anodized it clear if you really want to anodize. My vote would be the chrome look with original decals.;)
I guessing the ignitor location is only temp. since you don't have everthing installed yet.:D

Now my dilemma, do I leave it chrome and clear coat it, or do I do a translucent anodized red over it like some of the other accents on the engine? :D

OK, looks like polished is winning. I will be doing whatever is decided to it Saturday night, so keep the votes coming.

I have to take the :princess: out Saturday morning for our annual Christmas breakfast/get the Xmas tree/put the tree up, while sipping cider/sit around the tree and tell old Christmas stories routine. After all that she will think I'm a great husband and I can ask her to come look at something! ;)

She is good with color matching so I'll let her make the final decision. Pretty sure she will also go with the polished/clear coat.

The ignition coil will indeed be relocated to the passenger fender. I have a custom made bracket for it already.

Pretty pretty

Clear with red lettering and nuts. Gold leaf would be cool too... It's looking great! Keep it up.

Clear

Personally I would go with clear, I can't say red would look bad just my personal pref

How's the overall build going Cooler, can you see light at the end of the tunnel yet?

Overall? Not bad. I'm finishing a slide in extension for my oven today so I can get the valve cover and headers in there.

The wife is actually leaning toward anodized red powder coating with polished acorn nuts on top! She like the polished look but once I had shown her the other parts to be bolted to the engine, she said it needed more color. We will see...

The headers are no longer going to be flat red, she just said 'no', that color would look stupid. So.... I have to get a can of silver VHT today also.

I have also been devoting a lot of time to studying the electrical system, and how I want to modify it. I plan to take the harness apart, replace the fuse panel with a more modern blade type, add the wires I need for various things, move the alternator wires to the passenger side, upgrade the headlight wiring and finally wrap it all back up.
