Negotiating a trade for this 1978 FJ40 for my 1989 FJ62. My 62 has 232+ on the clock with a 4" OME Shackle Reversal Lift, 20" MotoMetal Rims, 35" Toyo MT's with 4.88 gears and 4" modified gearshift. Champion Aluminum Radiator, NGK Plugs and Wires, Royal Purple & RedLine Synthetics, JVC Tuner & Infinity Speakers, SLCFJ62's Ultimate Harness, Hella Headlamps. The FJ40 has a 4" lift and showing 30+ on the clock. The 40 runs strong and shifts smoothly. 4x4 works as it should and the 40 has surface rust on three little spots. Solid frame. Just looking for any thoughts for, against the trade.

Straight up trade?

That 40 owner is nuts, grab it and don't look back.

Looks like it may have had a respray at one point in time. But she's awfully pretty..

Trade, trade, trade....your future self will "Thank you" for it.

Oh, it appears you could install one of these and that rear pinion angle maybe just fine...(or shim as described above.)

Would someone go into further detail about the pinion angle. What are they looking at in order for it to be at a "weird" angle

The rear pinion flange and the output on the transfer case arent pointed at each other potentially causing a bind in the u joint of the driveshaft and a vibration at speed. Caused by the 4" lift. Cheap and easy to fix by using a double Carden driveshaft from an fj60, pinion shims or removing and rewelding the spring perches.

This seems like a pretty good deal for you. Take it, run and then fix the small things you'll find as you drive it.

It almost looks like there are shims on the back axle with the fat side pointing forward - hard to see in the pic. That would mess up the pinion angle. Easy fix.

As others have said, it is a lopsided trade with you being the winner. With that said, it really depends on what you want out of the rig. The 62 is MUCH more refined than the 40 will be. But I'd take the 40 any day of the week.

If you're an investor in rolling stock, then you must take the trade. Otherwise, maybe not. You already have a 40, correct?

Yes, I have a 76 that I recently purchased. I've known the owner of this 40 for a long time and he's always had his eye on my 62. I never thought I'd part with my 62 but if the right opportunity comes along then I'll entertain all offers.

That thing looks horrible!! Give me the guys number and I will call him for you :)

I've known the owner of this 40 for a long time...

This could make it awkward... Does he know how much his is worth? I think everyone is assuming a straight trade but perhaps that isn't the case? That would help with the potential awkwardness.

the 40 is worth so much more monetarily, and as a 40 owner i would say its also cooler and more desirable. but i will also say that every 60 i see has my head turning and saying, one day...

if you have a good 40 already, then personally, i would be inclined to keep the 60. but thats only bc in my perfect garage i would have a 60 as well as a 40

If you are in it for the money take the trade, but your very nice white 60 that's makes a pair with your recently acquired white 40 will be gone forever.

What is worse to you, missing the money deal or your nice 60 ?

It's a nice 40, but ask 60 heads not 40 heads ;)

Straight up trade and the 40 owner is aware of the monetary value of both respective vehicles. The 40 owner is looking for more creature comforts while driving.
